  • Afghanistan beat Scotland by one wicket

  1. Sco 172-8 (Naib 8-0-47-1)published at 01:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

This is nice, sensible batting from Scotland who are edging towards the 200 they crave. Majid Haq drives Naib for two before the bowler delivers the 11th wide of the innings. Combine that with the runs given away by mistakes in the field and I reckon it's in excess of 20. Could prove costly if the game is close.

    Warren Lees
Ex-New Zealand wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"We haven't seen the ball hit aerially to mid-on or mid-off the whole innings. That is something to do with the pace of the bowling, as well as the length, but also how Scotland have stayed in their crease. Scotland have taken an area of the field away by not coming forward. The intention of saying we're just going to nurdle the ball around hasn't been the answer."

  3. Sco 167-8 (partnership: 23)published at 01:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

There's quite a few schoolchildren in the ground today and they get every excitable in front of the camera as they wave Afghanistan and Scotland flags. And one lad holds up a Rubik's Cube. What's the strangest thing you've ever taken to the cricket? He's probably got Ker-Plunk in his bag.

Shapoor is back into the attack and he is milked for ones and twos by the wagging Scotland tail.

  4. England women updatepublished at 01:10 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

England women need 169 to level the one-day series against New Zealand after dismissing the White Ferns for 168 off the last ball of the innings in Lincoln.

Kate Cross with 5-24 and Rebecca Grundy with 3-36 led the way for England while Amy Satterthwaite top-scored with 27.

  5. Sco 163-8 (run-rate 3.88)published at 01:08 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

There's another brief delay while Majid Haq changes bats after his last one broke at the end of the previous over. It's not the first time the willow has snapped in this tournament. Alasdair Evans, whose highest ODI score is 22, runs a boundary down to third man and he looks quite set. He then shuffles in his crease to try and disrupt Naib's line and it works as he guides a single down to fine leg.

  6. Sco 157-8 (Haq 8, Evans 7)published at 01:03 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Just beyond the grassy banks of the University Oval, there's a hot dog van in view. I always like the wide array of different foods at the Test match, although I baulked at £8 for a burrito at one ground last summer.

Back to more pressing matters, Scotland are keeping Afghanistan at bay for now. Their tail is showing commendable aptitude against the seaming ball as they eek out the odd single which will give them a fighting chance once they get the ball in hand.

It seems the local bobbies are supporting Afghanistan today. They'll be pleased with the scoreline then. Hamid Hassan continues to beat the outside edge with seam movement and slight lift. When the big man does pitch one up, he is flayed through the covers by Majid Haq.

  8. Sco 149-8 (run-rate: 3.82)published at 00:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

There is a brief delay between overs while Majid Haq puts tape over some sponsorship on his gloves. Too much branding on display it seems. Just one from the over.

"I've seen worse settings for international sport, this is cricket in Middle-earth. All runs precious for Scotland..."

  10. Sco 148-8 (Haq 2, Evans 4)published at 00:48 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Hamid Hassan's stock delivery appears to be the one which jags back into the right-hander at a decent lick. After seeing the way Alex Hales struggled with such deliveries against India last year, I reckon he could pose the England man some problems if the two go head to head in the final group game. Five dots, then a boundary for Alasdair Evans.

    Vic Marks
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"There have been some good balls bowled but you look back at that fourth-wicket partnership between Machan and Mommsen. They were going well and Machan, a senior player and batting well with almost 30 overs left, went for a big shot and got out. Given that three wickets had gone and the frailty of the batsmen to follow that was a wasteful wicket and Afghanistan knew they could press the batsmen once he had gone."

  12. Sco 144-8 (D Zadran 8-1-26-3)published at 00:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

"We are the Afghans," shout the Asian side's supporters, who claim to be an offshoot of the Barmy Army. Good effort. Scotland's last hope of a half-decent score seems to have ended with the dismissal of Richie Berrington.

Another one bites the dust as Dawlat Zadran picks up his third wicket. After beating the batsman with one which nips back, he runs one across the outside edge and the wicketkeeper does the rest.

  14. Sco 143-7 (run-rate: 3.97)published at 00:39 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Time for the powerplay. Hamid Hassan is given the task of bowling in it, after going through a wide array of stretches during the last over. He's such a colourful and energetic character - I have no idea, but he strikes me as somebody who might be a dressing room joker. He starts off by jagging one into Richie Berrington's pads. Not out, but it's close.

  15. How's stat?published at 00:37 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Before today Afghanistan had only bowled Scotland out one in their eight previous ODIs. That was at Benoni in 2009 when Scotland scored 206, which was their first meeting and actually Afghanistan's first ever ODI.

(206 is not Scotland's lowest total v Afghanistan as they made 199-8 in 50 overs at Sharjah in 2013).

  16. Sco 142-7 (Berrington 24, Haq 2)published at 00:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Majid Haq might have a first-class century to his name, but he doesn't have a bat sponsor. His bat looks like an over-sized toothpick as he sits back in his crease and guides a single down to fine leg. Two from the over.

  18. 'Lots of passion'published at 00:30 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles, speaking to a pitch-side reporter: "I am trying to educate the players to show them how to prepare. They have a lot of passion, a will to work hard and an undying belief that they can beat anybody. Those are great things to have.

"They just have to understand that you can't improve overnight but you need a long-term goal and plenty of work hard to improve."

  19. Sco 140-7 (Nabi 9-0-36-1)published at 00:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Scotland just haven't been able to get hold of Afghanistan's sole spinner, Mohammad Nabi, today although Richie Berrington does manage a four through extra cover to bring some light relief.

"Sha-poooor, Sha-poooor, is the chant of the Afghanistan fans beneath the TMS box. They're right to be excited, an attack of Test quality has torn into this Scotland batting line-up and is lining us up for an early finish in Dunedin."
