"What a dramatic over. What a topsy-turvy day for Haq. He dropped Sherwani, went for over 18 in this over and now has the vital wicket. What an innings from the Afghanistan batsman, though."

Three sixes and out! Shenwari cannot believe it... he's holed out to Josh Davey at deep mid-wicket.

  3. Sixpublished at 05:44 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Majid Haq is coming round the wicket and Shenwari plants another maximum over mid-wicket.

  4. Sixpublished at 05:43 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

A wide and then make that two sixes for Shenwari, who just about gets the ball over the diving fielder at backward square leg.

  5. Sixpublished at 05:42 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Majid Haq trundles in to begin his final over and Shenwari hammers a six over mid-wicket.

Fans and officials from both sides are biting their nails, almost praying for something to go their way in these tense closing overs. The run-rate is mounting as Hamid Hassan uses up three balls without scoring, then takes a single to third man. Shenwari keeps the strike with a single to cover.

Scotland won't need reminding that Majid Haq dropped a straightforward slip catch to get rid of Shenwari when he was on 20. In fact, Haq is having a mare... the spinner missing a chance to run out Hamid Hassan with the batsman stranded mid-pitch when he can't get the ball out of his hands in time from the non-striker's end. Two more chipped from the ever-decreasing target.

  8. Afg 168-8 (need 43 runs off 36 balls)published at 05:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Whatever happens now, Shenwari does not deserve to finish on the losing side. He's really worn his heart on his sleeve during this innings, it clearly means so much. Scotland bring in two slips for Hamid Hassan and test him with a short one which is pulled to the boundary for four. A yorker is then dug out for a single meaning he retains the strike.

"Now you can sense a bit of tension out there among the Scots. Hassan has essentially been passive until now."

Four dot balls and then Shenwari goes for broke - planting Majid Haq onto the pavilion roof. He's giving everything here, kneeling as the ball sails over the boundary. It's probably due to sheer mental exhaustion.

"It has been gallant effort from Shenwari as he has seen mayhem happen at the other end. At some point Hassan is going to have to contribute here because he is going to be on strike. He can take his time but he is going to have to go beyond blocking."

This is Scotland's Edgbaston 05. Who will be their Steve Harmison? Evans runs his fingers across the seam and beats Hamid Hassan on the outside edge, then pulls up in his delivery stride to try and unsettle the nervy number 10. Shenwari has words... this could get sparky. Hamid Hassan is trying to restrain himself and watches one go past him, then Matt Cross saves four leg byes with some athletic keeping. This is turning into a cracker. I did tell you so at 21:30 GMT yesterday!

"Bangladesh have now conceded a 100 run opening partnership in 39 of their 296 ODIs. At 13.17% of their games this is the highest of any team that has played 20 or more ODIs. 2nd are Zimbabwe with 11.36%. By comparison Australia have also conceded 39 opening partnerships over 100, but in 849 ODIs."

Breakthrough for Bangladesh in Melbourne. Thirimanne's luck finally runs out as he guides Rubel Hossain straight into the hands of Taskin at third man.

Kumar Sangakkara receives a great reception as he strides out for his 400th one-day international.

  16. Afg 154-8 (Shenwari 67, Hassan 3)published at 05:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Davey bowls his last and bowls it well, with a good line. Shenwari takes a single off the second ball and Hassan takes no risks and no runs from the remaining four. Scotland are still favourites here but they could really do with a wicket to ease their nerves and bring in the Afghanistan number 11.

Majid Haq's off-spin to close out the powerplay. Just a sweeped single for Shenwari, but Hamid Hassan gets off the mark in nice style by opening the face and angling three down to third man.

  19. Afg 148-8 (target 211)published at 05:10 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Just waking up? First of all... good morning. Now, before you put the kettle on, let me tell you Scotland are two wickets away from their first ever Cricket World Cup victory. However, Afghanistan are putting up a late fight - Shenwari clouting Josh Davey for six over mid-wicket and then four through the off side. The comparison between the two sides is almost identical now. Who will prevail?

  20. How's stat?published at 05:05 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Samiullah Shenwari's 113-ball fifty is the slowest for Afghanistan in ODIs.

It was 95 by Asghar Stanikzai v Australia in Sharjah in 2012 and 95 Samiullah Shenwari v Ireland in Dubai in 2015

There have only been two slower 50s in all ODIs since 1 January, 2008:

119 balls Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka v Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2009 and 119 balls Misbah-ul-Haq of Pakistan v West Indies in Providence in 2013
