  • Afghanistan beat Scotland by one wicket

  1. Afg 97-7 (Zadran 0, Shenwari 24)published at 04:05 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

The Scotland players jog round as another successful over ends. Dawlat Zadran has joined Shenwari at the crease. As long as Shenwari is there, Afghanistan will believe they can still pull off an unlikely win. It will have to be some innings, though.

"That was good captaincy - he had a slip and a gully. There was no need for a second slip, he had it covered with those two fielders."

Afghanistan are falling apart now. Gulbadin Naib is the new man but he lasts just one ball as he prods nervously at a Davey delivery, which catches the shoulder of the bat and loops up for first slip Haq to dive and catch. Scotland have victory in sight.

"Afghanistan really need someone to play the innings of their life. They have fallen away here and now they are in all sorts of straits. They will feel sad because I think the standard has been average from both teams. It's a good game of cricket, even if the skill levels aren't there."

  5. WICKETpublished at 03:57 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

He may not be the most threatening bowler in the world but Berrington is doing a superb job for Scotland here. Two balls after slightly over-pitching and allowing Zadran to get off the mark with a driven four, he finds a much better length and tempts the batsman into a ill-timed flash and catches an edge behind to Haq at slip. No mistakes this time for the off-spinner, who claims and runs away in delight. Scotland are now firmly in control.

"One of these two needs to score 50. Afghanistan can't let this collapse go any further. They have to fight for the next six or seven overs to ensure that."

Thirimanne got a golden duck in Sri Lanka's nervy victory over Afghanistan but there are signs that he might make Bangladesh pay for their early profligacy in Melbourne. The left-hander has advanced to 11 not out alongside Dilshan (3 not out) in a cautious start by the 1996 champs.

  8. Afg 90-5 (Shenwari 22, Zadran 0)published at 03:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Shenwari has not looked entirely convincing, but there is a lot of pressure on him now. The left-handed Najibullah Zadran is the new man at the crease and he is able to survive his first ball after Shenwari clips the over's only run to long leg.

"That's an example of yet another player who didn't learn from the Scottish innings. He sat on the back foot, showed two pads to the bowler and invited him to hit them halfway up."

Another one goes! Another efficient Berrington over ends in the best way possible as new man Afsar Zazai goes first ball. It is a full delivery and the batsman basically offers both of his pads to be hit bang in front. No chance of a review this time. That is plum and Scotland are rampant!

  12. Dropped catchpublished at 03:47 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Oh no! What a chance for Scotland to really get themselves on top. Berrington draws a flashing drive from Shenwari and catches an outside edge that is straight into the midriff of Haq at slip. Unfortunately for the Scots, Haq makes a hash of it and spills it.

"The batsman was taking a huge risk by playing against the line to a full ball. It's a big wicket because Nabi is their captain and he could have guided the team to their goal. Now we've got a game on."

  14. WICKETpublished at 03:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Scotland captain Mommsen is certainly keeping the Afghanistan batsmen guessing from one end as another change sees Wardlaw replaced by Davey. It is an effective change as Davey concedes a solitary single before hammering a delivery into the static Nabi's pads and prompting a raised finger from the umpire. Nabi reviews it but this shows it is just clipping leg and is given as umpire's call by the slimmest of margins. Scotland strike again!

"Richie Berrington is making a virtue of having no pace. He barely gets up to 75mph, and that's not including the slower balls."

  17. Afg 87-3 (Shenwari 19, Nabi 1)published at 03:40 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Ahmadi's replacement is the right-handed Mohammad Nabi, who scored 21 against Sri Lanka. He gets off the mark from his first ball. Shenwari flat-bats a couple before completing a risky single from a drive to mid-off. All-in-all a very successful over from Berrington. The required run-rate remains at 4.

It's a dramatic start to proceedings in Melbourne as Lahiru Thirimanne gets a thick edge on Mashrafe Mortaza's third ball but Anamul Haque drops an absolute dolly at slip. A huge let-ff for the struggling Sri Lankans.

"That's quite a good catch because it went up a long time. It was up there long enough for Machan to think that if he didn't catch it, his team would lose. I'm not sure about the shot selection though."

Well, will you look at that. Just as I was talking up Ahmadi's potential role in winning this game he goes for one big shot too many and skies a Berrington ball straight to Machan at long on. Scotland are back in this game again.
