"Vettori has beaten the batsman on the outside - that's not his usual mode of wicket delivery. He usually gets them lbw or through the gate but it was good bowling from Vettori. It was not a great shot, the ball didn't do too much.

Captain McCullum continues to shuffle his bowlers - and the return of Vettori brings another wicket as Nabi gives a regulation edge to first slip. It's proving a procession with the group leaders well on top.

  3. Afg 59-4 (Shenwari 10*, Nabi 6*)published at 23:24 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Napier is the highest scoring first-innings ODI venue in the world since 2005, with an average of 309 in its last 17 ODIs. I'm not a betting man, but I'd wager that that average will come down a little today. The tall Milne, with only three wickets in four tournament games before today, is nevertheless proving economical - two singles from the over.

  4. Afg 57-4published at 23:20 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Despite those sensational figures of 4-2-5-2, Vettori's off and Trent Boult will have another burst. We've not had a boundary for five overs in Napier, while even twos have been pretty rare as Afghanistan find Boult difficult to work away - Nabi guides one past gully which takes two men to retrieve as they come back for a second.

  5. Afg 53-4 (Shenwari 8*, Nabi 2*)published at 23:16 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Adam Milne to continue, he's keeping the experienced Kyle Mills out of the NZ side at the moment - though Mills has his hands full playing in this weekend's Davis Cup tennis tie for Britain, under the pseudonym "Andy Murray" - you can watch and listen on the BBC on Sunday.

Back in Napier, Shenwari and Nabi take a single apiece from Milne's over. Still looks an absolute scorcher at McLean Park - I hope everyone's remembering the sun cream.

David, Spain, via TMS inbox: Many congratulations to Daniel Vettori on his 300th ODI wicket. - Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

  7. Afg 51-4 (Vettori 4-2-5-2)published at 23:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Captain Mohammad Nabi is the new batsman - and his opposite number Brendon McCullum has used the drinks break to summon a helmet (and a protective box) so he can stand at short leg. Yes, short leg, in the 15th over of an ODI - that's the sort of captain he is. Nabi dabs a single to get his side to the landmark of 50 runs, Shenwari works one through the covers to move to seven from 19 balls.

"Deserved applause for Vettori. It's been a great career - and is far from over yet. He has caused a lot of concern for opponents since making his debut in 1997.

"It has been a pleasure to watch him over the past 18 years. I first watched him as 15-year-old boy and of course he is a bit more willowy and lithe now, but he has always been consistent throughout his career.

"It is not always easy to bowl consistent line and length but for him it is automatic. He's a very clever bowler and will be someone who is always part of New Zealand's cricketing history."

The umpires use that dismissal to signal a drinks break while Vettori reflects on his bowling figures - 3.1-2-3-2.

Vettori does the damage - taking his 300th ODI wicket as he flights an arm ball which takes the top of Nawroz's off stump.

He is the 12th bowler and the first New Zealander to reach the landmark. Not bad for the man who some of us remember as a gawky, bespectacled teenager when he first came into international cricket in 1997.

  11. Afg 49-3 (Nawroz 27*, Shenwari 6*)published at 23:04 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Boult (2-20 from six) takes a rest as New Zealand turn to the pace of young Adam Milne from the Centennial Stand End. Shane Bond aside, New Zealand have rather lacked for genuine pace in recent years, and Nawroz uses the extra pace well as he uppercuts a single over the slips.

  12. Postpublished at 23:04 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

    Derek Stirling
Ex-New Zealand seamer on BBC Test Match Special

"Mangal is the important man for Afghanistan, with Shenwari not getting going yet. Mangal has looked quite dangerous at times. He's been a bit flirty at that off stump, especially with Boult, but he has shown some intent."

  13. Afg 46-3 (Vettori 3-2-3-1)published at 23:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Vettori is quickly through his over, using all his experience to entice a false shot from Shenwari - there's a half-hearted appeal as he spins a slower ball into the right-hander's pads but it was going down leg. Maiden over - Vettori has only conceded three runs in three overs.

  14. Postpublished at 23:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

    Derek Stirling
Ex-New Zealand seamer on BBC Test Match Special

"We will give Ross Taylor the benefit of the doubt there, it just didn't quite carry. But it is dangerous playing away from your body, giving the outside edge a chance. Then Mangal danced down the wicket - McCullumesque - in the next ball to hit Boult to the boundary. Very nice."

  15. Afg 46-3published at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Boult goes round the wicket to the two left-handers, Nawroz edges but it falls just short of Ross Taylor at first slip. Reprieved, he comes down the track and blasts a four through the covers to one of those short boundaries in front of the dressing rooms.

  16. Afg 38-3 (Nawroz 17*, Shenwari 5*)published at 22:54 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

It's still a scorcher in Napier as Southee takes a rest and Daniel Vettori comes back on for some left-arm spin - his opening over (the third) having been a wicket maiden. There's a long-on and a man at cow corner posted for the big heave against the spin, but for now the Afghans are watchful. Three singles from the over.

Rob Meech: Trent Boult is an excellent swing bowler and a dead ringer for Rickie Fowler, who's not bad at swinging a golf club.

He certainly has a more sensible haircut than those normally sported by Rickie Fowler...

  18. Afg 35-3published at 22:50 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

The fielding restrictions are over but New Zealand has three slips, a fifth slip and a gully and only one man on the leg side inside the circle as Boult, left-arm over, fires the ball across the right-handed Nawroz. Just a wide and a single from the over, with Boult a whisker away from finding the edge again.

Vakaas Ahmed, TMS inbox: Woken up to the news of Mohammed Nabi choosing to bat first against New Zealand, good idea too as it probably would have been another 400+ given McCullum's form.

  20. Scorecard updatepublished at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015
