  1. Afg 6-1published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Former skipper Nawroz Mangal is the new batsman in at number three, he sees a wide go past his legs but then does well to dig out a yorker.

And if you didn't see that graphic we posted just before the start, that puts Boult up to a tournament-high seven lbw appeals - four of which have been successful.

"I think Ahmadi thinks it is too high. It is fairly straight. He pointed to where he thought it hit him - above the knee. But it would have been hitting the stumps - just. It is a good decision."

It hit him fairly high up on the knee-roll, but it pitched in line, impacted in line, and it's "umpire's call" for clipping the leg bail - so Ahmadi's on his way.

  4. Umpire reviewpublished at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Left-arm seamer Trent Boult, so impressive in that win over Australia, looks to have struck again when he traps Ahmadi in front attempting to drive - but Afghanistan call for a review.

That breeze I mentioned? It blew umpire Cloete's black sunhat off just before the start of the over.

"Nice tidy start from Tim Southee, but not particularly troubling the batsmen. It was a fairly standard over, bowled nice line and length, but handled comfortably by both batsmen."

  6. Afg 5-0published at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Southee, from the Centennial Stand End, has three slips in from the start. He fires his second ball onto leg stump, Ahmadi tries to help it on its way and it flies away for four leg byes. The first runs off the bat come from a square drive down to third man, while it looks a windy day on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island - a couple of spectators and a steward battling to keep their headgear in place.

Javed Ahmadi and Usman Ghani are opening the batting for Afghanistan - Tim Southee, who made a memorable Test debut against England on this ground in 2008, will take the first over. Let's play.

"This is a good opportunity for New Zealand to get out there and make the most of the conditions later today. I don't see there being too much in the wicket. It will be hard and fast with good carry - it is an opportunity for edges to carry and no doubt New Zealand will pack the field."

  9. Welcome to Napier - get your tin hats onpublished at 21:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

If you're not familiar with McLean Park, it's primarily a rugby ground which is also used for cricket. But it's the opposite configuration to Auckland's Eden Park (which has short straight boundaries and long square ones) - Napier has some very, very short square boundaries (one only about 50m) where even a mis-hit from powerful players like Brendon McCullum can easily sail into the stands for six. Tin hats on.

Now it's time for "God Defend New Zealand". The locals of Hawke's Bay are out in force for this, the second of three World Cup games in Napier. Bright and sunny for this game - a day game with no need for floodlights.

"I think Afghanistan have approached it right by winning the toss and batting first. They got an absolute pasting against Australia last time out, but have to forget about that.

"The best thing to do against New Zealand is to bat first - we have seen how New Zealand strangely chase a target however small."

Michael Powell: Surprised NZ are unchanged again, tonight would be a good chance to rest a few legs/give some others match practice.

duncan garrett: Think Afghanistan batting first might've cost us the chance to see another McCullum master class. Could be chasing small total.

This tournament continues to be a learning curve for the Afghanistan players. As expected, they were comprehensively out-played by Australia in their previous game at Perth, with the co-hosts recording a recording winning margin of 275 runs.

Their coach Andy Moles remains philosophical, though, and hopes the experience will only help them in the future, especially facing the likes of Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson, who have and will blast out far more prominent players on the Waca track.

"We have to learn from what we came across," he said. "When you come across these players once every four years it's difficult for the boys. The guys also had to face 150kph on one the quickest, bounciest wicket in the world and it's totally alien to them."
