"Maybe he could've got his second hand to it. But it is like AB de Villiers has had a talk with himself and will look to attack more aggressively now."

Stand-in spinner Shaiman Anwar may well have bowled his first and only four deliveries in international cricket, as he's replaced by the lanky seamer Amjad Javed. AB and JP look relatively comfortable until De Villiers hits one hard just to the bowler's left, Javed gets his left hand to it but can't hold on. A drop - and a possibly costly one. As if to add insult to injury, De Villiers effortlessly hoists the next ball over mid-wicket for six. Why? Because he can. It pushes his strike rate over 100 for the first time, I think - he has 69 from 68 balls.

  4. SA 206-4 (De Villiers 61, Duminy 1)published at 03:46 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2015

JP Duminy is the new batsman, like Miller he's a left-hander so South Africa still have a useful left-hand/right-hand combo. But he's going to have to get going pretty quickly - he's off the mark with a single.

"There was no one back at deep mid-wicket and that was the area David Miller was trying to attack. But he is absolutely furious that he dragged it back on to his stumps. You got the feeling he only needed one more run to get to his 50 and then would've really pushed on to get a century. That's why he is so angry."

  6. WICKETpublished at 03:41 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2015

Opening bowler Mohammad Naveed to return - and makes the breakthrough as Miller chops onto his stumps and looks livid! It was the first legitimate ball of Naveed's over after a wide - and Miller falls one short of a half-century. He's really missed out there in several ways.

  8. SA 203-3published at 03:40 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2015

While the golf buggy/milk float takes Fahad Alhashmi away for treatment, and possibly deliver a few pints of semi-skimmed on the way, Shaiman Anwar is going to finish Alhashmi's over - he's never even bowled in international cricket before, let alone in a powerplay. While listed on Cricinfo as "right-arm medium-fast", it looks like he's bowling off-spin. And with four balls to bowl, it's not the worst start from Anwar that he only concedes four singles.

"It is Alhashmi's first game of the tournament and he was doing pretty well with ball in hand. Unfortunately he will not be able to bowl his full amount of overs and won't be able to bat later. It's a real shame for him."

The big man doesn't look like he's going to be able to stay on the field here, let alone finish his over. Looks like his knee has gone. Two members of the support staff help Alhashmi walk away, he's wincing with every step - and he's even going to be met halfway by one of those golf buggies which they use to transport injured players.

  11. Powerplaypublished at 03:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2015

Umpire Steve Davis whirls his arm to signal the batting powerplay with only three fielders permitted outside the fielding circle, and then it's more woe for Fahad Alhashmi as he goes down in his follow-through as the ball is struck to his left, crashes to the turf and the UAE physio is called on.

  15. De Villiers 50published at 03:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2015

And that's a 45th ODI fifty for AB de Villiers, who's averaging over 153 in ODIs played in New Zealand, as he nudges the lumbering Alhashmi for four off his legs. South Africa are moving up through the gears here. Cruising, you might say. Just like the enormous cruise ship in Wellington harbour - from which two people are peering down into the stadium.

Farbrace said SL (who he coached to T20 champs last year) are much more reliant on stats, data and team meetings than England. Besides this data argument is a red herring. When you win, it is good preparation. When you lose, same data is stifling and restrictive."

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace has been talking to the media before his side's last game of the World Cup against Afghanistan tomorrow.

One 43-year-old spinner replaces another in the attack as Tauqir gives way to vice-captain (and ex-skipper) Khurram Khan, who's only bowled in one of their four previous World Cup group games. De Villiers doesn't need to "have a look" - he effortlessly guides Khurram's first ball through the covers for four. Five singles off the remaining five deliveries mean ABDV is within one run of his umpteenth half-century - and the players have earned some drinks.

  20. SA 176-3 (De Villiers 42, Miller 40)published at 03:19 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2015

Still sunny in Wellington, despite that rogue forecast of rain earlier in the week, as Alhashmi strays down the leg side and the right-handed De Villiers helps it away for four. The over is bookended by a similar shot from the left-handed Miller, that's his second four. This stand is worth 80.
