"The biggest issue between associate cricket and international cricket is the gap between the two. How do you close that gap? The only way is by exposing these players and these teams to that level of competition."

  3. Afg 68-5 (England won toss)published at 06:38 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

It's so flat out in the middle. England are doing a professional job, but they cannot get too excited about the wickets tumbling. James Tredwell is milked for three singles.

  4. Afg 63-4 (Bopara 5-1-16-1)published at 06:36 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

It's a grey day at the SCG, it's more Salford than Sydney. England have packed the off side field, putting in two slips who are almost brought into play when the new batsman Mohammad Nabi nibbles at a seam-up delivery but doesn't quite edge behind.

"Ravi has just shoved it back in my face. I was talking about front-line bowlers coming on and making a difference and Ravi has done just that. Afghanistan are in real trouble."

Grey skies, a damp, green pitch, Ravi Bopara's dibbly-dobblies and the batsman edges behind to the keeper. If only the World Cup had been played at Old Trafford.

England's World Cup campaign ends today, on Friday the 13th. It started on Valentine's Day. There's got to be a gag in there somewhere, but I've not stumbled across a good one yet.

We're almost ready to get back under way in Sydney then. Remember, Afghanistan are 62-4 after 25 overs after Eoin Morgan won the toss and asked them to bat first.

"Restart at half past, 45 a side. We should be close to the end of the Afghan innings by now. It's as if the Sydney weather is having a last laugh on England - they can't even get the tournament over quickly."

BBC Radio 5 live's Tim Peach is out in Australia at the moment, and he's been talking to Scotland captain Preston Mommsen.

He asked Mommsen about Majid Haq, who has been sent home for sending a race-related tweet: "I can understand his frustration on being left out - I rate him highly, I backed him in many a game, he's one of our standout performers.

"I understand his frustration, but there are ways of showing that frustration and venting that frustration, and I don't think social media was the right option for him. So it's regrettable for us and disappointing as a team that he chose that route, but I have no doubt that he'll learn from it, and he'll definitely be back."

Jay: Isn't it obvious? Including Tredders would increase the chance of success & the England team management is allergic to success.

Tim Lloyd: England selection policy creates too much mediocracy. Players given too many chances. Fringe players get few chances.

I hear the covers are coming off at the SCG. Hopefully it won't be long before we're back up and running, with extra juice in the pitch for Jimmy and Co.

Sussex have signed veteran Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene for the first half of this summer's T20 Blast competition.

The 37-year-old has never played in English county cricket before, despite having turned out for three different Indian Premier League teams and also in the Caribbean Premier League.

Richard Giles: If analysing data is the way forward for the ECB, then it's obvious Moores and Co should go and Andrew Samson takes charge.

  20. Tredwell v Malingapublished at 06:10 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

During the rain delay, I looked at James Tredwell's one-day international bowling stats. He has a bowling average of 27.81, an economy rate of 4.77 and a strike-rate of 34.9. Compare that to Lasith Malinga, whose bowling average is 27.25, economy rate is 5.22 and strike-rate is 31.2.

My point? Why has Tredders had to wait until today to play in the World Cup? Discuss.
