"It has been an assertive innings from Guptill, 50 from 44 balls. His best of this tournament. He has not played a false shot so far, but lets not put the curse on him. He has a lot of work to do if New Zealand are to win this."

We have got play in Hamilton though, where New Zealand are 73-2 after 12 overs, replying to Bangladesh's 288-7. Mahmudullah scored another century, hitting 128 off 123 balls for the Tigers.

For the Black Caps, Martin Guptill has reached his 22nd ODI fifty from 44 balls.

Has your 6am alarm just gone off? Wondering how England are getting on? Or do you barely care?

Credit when credit's due, England have bowled well today, even if it is against Afghanistan. James Anderson has nipped the ball about well and Chris Jordan's pace has brought two wickets. Weather permitting, they at least look on course to finish the tournament on a high. Even if it's a mouse squeak-like high.

"If you are going to have a blank piece of paper and get up to speed with the rest of the world, people like Bell need to be moved aside. England need to be bringing in the people who have been brought up in Twenty20. That is what the rest of the world are doing: taking the best T20 players and making them into 50-over players. By getting knocked out at this stage, it could be the best thing that happens to English cricket because the structure can change."

So the players have scampered from the field. Two young groundsmen legged it to the middle to start covering the square. The two senior members of the ground staff chugged on in a golf buggy. You've got to earn the right to take a ride!

Thanks Phil. You've bailed out now the rain's arrived? What am I going to talk about now?

  9. Afg 62-4published at 05:53 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Tredwell continues and wheels through another over at the cost of just two more runs. At some point, Afghanistan are going to have to go on the attack. Not for a bit though. Here comes more rain. I now hand you over to Mr Marc Higginson, who delivered my tea and is now going to see you through the rest of this innings... once it restarts.

  10. Afg 59-4 (Shafiqullah 9, Jamal 15)published at 05:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

These two batsmen have consolidated somewhat. At 25 this is the biggest partnership of the innings. It has been far from attacking, entertaining stuff but it could have been a lot worse. A projection on screen suggests that eight-an-over would take Afghanistan over 260. Very optimistic.

  12. Afg 56-4published at 05:45 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

On comes James Tredwell for some spin, some would say five games too late. Jamal works one off his pads to claim a single from the first ball but it is the only one Afghanistan can take from the over as Shafiqullah is pinned at the striker's end. Drinks time. For the players and me - I've just had a much-needed tea delivered. Lovely stuff.

New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum in this World Cup:

    • Facing seam: 222 runs off 109 balls, out three times. Strike rate: 203.66. Average: 74.00

    • Facing spin: 35 runs off 28 balls, out three times. Strike rate: 125.00. Average: 11.66

  14. Afg 55-4 (Jamal 13, Shafiqullah 8)published at 05:41 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Broad is back and bowls largely just short of a length. He has Shafiqullah prodding and missing at one that pitches outside off and holds its line. Two runs off the over.

SUFC Shaun in Adelaide: I think Stephan Shemilt thinks he's at some dodgy nightclub rather than the cricket. Still the play list is probably more exciting than anything to do with the England cricket team at the moment. Just waiting for The Smiths "I know it's over" to echo around the SGC!

"Bangladesh today are the second team to open the bowling with two spinners in a World Cup game after Nathan McCullum and Daniel Vettori for New Zealand versus South Africa at Mirpur in 2011."

  17. Afg 54-4published at 05:38 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

There are signs of life in Afghanistan as Shafiqullah goes on the attack with some positive shots. He gets a couple of singles from a drive and a pull before adding four with a shot through mid-on, which Morgan chases and dives to flick back but is deemed to have touched the rope when he did so.

  20. Bangladesh v New Zealand updatepublished at 05:34 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

If Bangladesh's plan was to stifle Brendon McCullum with spin, it's worked - he's hoisted Shakib Al Hasan into the clutches of long-off. Kane Williamson then fell in the same over, caught at cover. NZ are 33-2 in the fifth over, chasing 289 to win.
