"As it stands New Zealand can simply bat on as they have been doing in the powerplay. The only danger is that if Bangladesh bowl well it is sometimes hard to pierce the field so they may take the option of going over the top."

Right then. Stephan, our man on the ground in Sydney, says it's "smashing it down". There's only one thing for it... let's switch focus to Hamilton where New Zealand are 179-3 after 34 overs chasing Bangladesh's 288-7 to win.

Hywel ap Rees: Eng vs Afg Let's be honest. This is like watching a county side take on a decent village cricket side for charity.

Jason Whitley: I agree with Vaughan as our cricket has gone passive. I'd go as far as removing Jimmy A and Broad.

  4. Ross Taylor 50published at 07:39 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Ross Taylor, who passed the landmark of 5,000 ODI runs earlier today, has reached his 30th ODI fifty, from 82 balls. He's been joined by Grant Elliott, who swept his second ball for four. New Zealand are 173-3, needing 116 more from 17 overs - the wily Shakib Al Hasan has 3-34 having taken all three wickets, but only has three more overs up his sleeve.

"It is absolutely smashing down in Sydney, the sort of rain that ends matches. Puddles are forming on one part of the outfield and just off the huge white sheet that covers the square. There are six poor souls in plastic ponchos guarding the playing area, presumably from pitch invaders. Surely if someone is daft enough to go out there in this weather, you let them crack on?"

It sounds like we won't be seeing any more of the Afghanistan batting in Sydney. Once the rain stops at the SCG, we expect England will chase down a Duckworth-Lewis revised total. The Afghans are currently 111-7 after 36.2 overs so it won't be the most challenging of targets...

"I am really impressed with Bangladesh. You sense they have been hungry throughout. In the England game they stuck in right until the end. Today they have posted 288 against arguably the best bowling attack in the competition."

  8. Weather updatepublished at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

I've just checked BBC Weather's forecast for Sydney and it doesn't appear as though we will have too many more delays once we get back on the field. It's currently 18:31 local time...

And on that note, Guptill has gone for 105, caught at long-on off Shakib Al Hasan. New Zealand are 164-3 in the 31st over chasing 289, with Ross Taylor still there on 47.

"This game today will be important for New Zealand to have an emphatic victory. Guptill bringing it home would be ideal. They can have huge confidence going into the last eight unbeaten."

"It's been excellent batting from Martin Guptill, he's been on the money from ball one. He hit some sweet sixes off Shakib early on, but he's looked in great form and hit Bangladesh all around the park."

  15. What you may have missedpublished at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Where you at this morning? Got a three-day weekend? Lucky you. Just getting on the tube? It's almost weekend. Wondering how England are getting on? Wonder no more.

Just to quickly bring you up to date... England won the toss and have caused Afghanistan all sorts of problems on a spicy SCG pitch under leaden skies. James Anderson bowled like James Anderson should, nipping the ball all over the place as he picked up an early wicket. Chris Jordan is also moving the ball off the seam - that combined with his extra pace bringing two wickets. Ravi Bopara has a two-fer too. In short, it's been a decent morning's work.

  16. Guptill 100published at 07:17 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

A second centurion of the game in Hamilton - Martin Guptill has reached his sixth ODI hundred from 88 balls, though not before needing a long visit from the physio to treat cramp when he reached 99. Otherwise, New Zealand are on cruise control - they're 156-2 in the 28th over needing 289 to win.

Chris Jordan responds to being belted back down the ground by bowling a steepling bouncer which hits the batsman on the gloves. Seconds later, the umpires take the players off because of rain.
