Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Jimmy Anderson that's the best he's bowled for 18 months, Stuart Broad the best he's bowled for a year, Moeen the worst he's bowled for a year, Joe Root, the worst he's bowled for two years."

  2. Postpublished at 20:39 British Summer Time 2 May 2015

James Anderson is now level with Dale Steyn on 396 Test wickets and is 12th on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers. How many more are there in the tank?

"One of the craziest days of Test cricket I can remember! What entertainment. Some fine bowling and some real rubbish."

Well, Jermaine Blackwood batted really well, but overall you'd have to say that was pretty wretched by West Indies. They didn't show the discipline and application necessary to prosper on a slightly uneven, tricky pitch.

A real mixed bag from England's bowlers but James Anderson stood out once again, showing superb control and mastery of swing to bamboozle the top-order batsmen, then unflinching patience to prevail when the tail-enders were trying to hit him out of the park.

6-42 for Anderson, his best Test figures overseas.

"Bowlers of Jimmy Anderson's class clean up the best players and are then brought back to mop up the tail. Blackwood was trying to put West Indies back on parity, because he's been let down by a lot of his teammates."

Irvine Flaherty: Can't see this lasting much longer.

Boom: Jimmy seems to have gone to another level since breaking the record.

If we see this many shots in Mayweather-Pacquiao tonight, we'll be lucky. Jermaine Blackwood, desperately striving for his second Test century, smacks Anderson back over his head into the stands, then tries to rifle him inside out over long-off and is well caught at full stretch by Moeen running round.

"Gabriel wouldn't be pleased at all because he bowled yesterday, he bowled today and it looks as though he will have to bowl again today. But it's called Test cricket, it tests your character."

Shannon Gabriel enters, with Jermaine Blackwood in real danger of being left high and dry. He's on 74 at the moment - make that 78 as he slices Moeen over cover for four. Moeen then duffs a run-out opportunity, failing to gather the ball cleanly with Gabriel on his heels.

Rachel T: Look, if you start hitting Jimmy around he will GET YOU!

This is kamikaze stuff from the West Indies. It's hang-the-consequences batting from Jerome Taylor, striking Anderson audaciously into the top tier, lofting him over mid-off for four, and then aiming a suicidal swipe at a full, reverse-swinging delivery and having his furniture comprehensively rearranged. Five wickets for Anderson, who has bowled superbly.

David McNaught: Jimmy's slower ball more effective than anything the "spinners" have tossed up.

Jerome Taylor, who has a Test century to his name, is the new man. He's off the mark with a big carve over cover off Moeen Ali for four.

"Permaul is from Guyana and has frustrated us with his batting on a few occasions. He looked like Gordon Greenidge with that pull shot. I thought Jimmy would have tried to nick him off but he hit the deck. He's bowled wonderfully today."

Oh, Veerasammy. He just can't help but push his luck. He collects two fours off Jimmy Anderson with a poke over extra-cover and a flip off his hips, but he goes for one too many, and ends up stabbing a well-disguised cutter straight to short leg. Sub fielder Adam Lyth, who has been fired at like a clay pigeon in that close position, takes a smart catch.

Moeen Ali, who sent down some absolute nonsense in the afternoon session, is handed the ball at the other end. Yowls of thwarted jubilation from Jos Buttler and the close fielders as the ball beats Permaul's bat and scuttles millimetres past the off stump before running away for four. Sadly, Moeen can't keep it on the money - another short delivery is swivelled on mercilessly by Jermaine Blackwood and dispatched into the leg side for a one-bounce four.

"I still think this is a good batting pitch, even though England didn't execute or get that big first-innings total."

  20. WI 140-7 (Blackwood 68, Permaul 1)published at 20:05 British Summer Time 2 May 2015

Blackwood gets the scoreboard moving after tea with a single to long-off, then Permaul blocks out the rest of Anderson's probing over.
