A tongue-tied England captain Alastair Cook: "It's one of the best matches I've ever been involved in - a great cricket wicket, two sides that gave their all and played as good cricket as they could play. I can't really speak. It was just a brilliant, brilliant day."

Alice Stainer: Love the poetic justice of the match being put to bed by much-maligned third man! This Test just didn't want to play by the rules.

"It gave almost everybody an opportunity to do well. You could score runs and yet the bowlers fancied their chances. There was a little bit of spin and the seamers bowled cutters and got movement so it encouraged everybody and exhilarated the spectators, there was always something happening."

Tom C: Well done Alastair Cook- amazing performances from several, but what a way to manage pressure!

Kevin Ticehurst: What a incredible Test match that was, from 30-4 to win it in those circumstances, That is why we all love TEST cricket!

Nicholas Wall: A superb victory for England; one of the best matches I've seen in years. A fantastic advert for Test cricket.

John Blenkharn: Tremendous match. Hope the new coach allows England to play the same brand of cricket. This is the only way to beat Australia

What a game. What a dramatic, gripping, entertaining, twisty, turny game.

England have not had many high moments in recent years but they can really savour this one. From seeming on-field and off-field chaos they have pulled out a performance that gives everyone connected with the team hope for the future.

They were brave, bold, resilient and, finally, ruthless. They are not the finished article by any means, but they appear to be a hell of a lot closer at the end of these five days than they were on Thursday. Bravo.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"It was one of the best Test matches of the modern era. Sometimes a great story needs a great ending and the look on Moeen's face after that fantastic catch was a mixture of joy, innocence and hopefulness. If England can remember those three things in the next 12 months of hard cricket it would be a wonderful thing."

"Well played England, their bowling in the end proved to be the difference. Eight and a half overs isn't a lot over five days but they have just been able to hold the edge throughout this game."

It's all over! England are victorious! Broad comes round the wicket to Boult who backs away and looks to steer one down to third man, but he gets too much on it and sends the ball spiralling upwards for Moeen Ali to take a superb diving catch in the deep.

An extraordinary game of cricket comes to an end. You almost don't want it to be over. But it is, and England have won it and boy are they enjoying the moment.

In Marlon Samuels/Joe Root style, I salute every single person involved.

"Will Broad continue to Boult and will he come around the wicket and try to attack him in that blind spot area? There are still 10 overs scheduled left to go so no need to panic at this stage. Down to five overs and it gets a wee bit tense."

Leo: Can't help but fear that the Kiwis will hold out for these last 11 overs. Boult and Henry have the air of limpets.

Right then Jimmy, what have you got left in the tank? Craig, crouched in his stance with eyes like saucers, awaits England's leading all-time wicket-taker. He blocks, he bobs, he weaves and then wafts at one that sends the ball agonisingly close to the slips but safe before catching an edge off a rising ball to send the ball looping to the vacant silly point area.
