"England have done some really good damage here. They have spread the field and it is a big outfield. They should be able to pick up at least five an over. They have had the positive start now they can step back a bit and control it. Low risk cricket shots for high reward."

Jamesd: This is the part that always lets England down, we can't score in the middle overs. Hopefully Root and Morgan will change that.

  3. Eng 91-2 (Root 47, Morgan 23)published at 14:58 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

An overpitched delivery from Henry is eased back down the ground by Morgan - that gets Brendon McCullum pumping his arms and legs like a powerwalker on the promenade to prevent four. Then a gentleman in a red sweater rather breezily decides to stroll behind the bowler's arm, causing a brief interruption. A jaunty wave of apology as he breaks into a slightly embarrassed trot to retake his place in the stands.

  4. Eng 82-2 (N McCullum 3-0-22-2)published at 14:53 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

England's new, turbo-charged approach continues - Morgan shimmies down the track and thrashes Nathan McCullum back over his head for a big six. Fetch the binoculars, that's one to stand and admire. England have decided to target Mitch McCleaghan in the field and they run a sharp two when the ball goes in his direction.

"The way England have come out and played - particularly Root - has been good today. Many have been frustrated by England's approach heading into that World Cup, but they are trying to get back on a pathway in ODI cricket and capture the mindset of the rest of the World."

  6. Eng 72-2 (Root 42, Morgan 9)published at 14:49 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Matt Henry restores order with a really tight over, just three singles and a rather harsh wide from it.

Howard Horner: First ten overs - I like this new England. More aggressive opening than we've seen for years. Also - Root is a treasure.

Billybunter3rd: Joe Root batting sublimely. Hopefully new England coach will make him ODI captain ASAP to get experience before Test captaincy.

"Morgan is not sitting back in his crease, he is getting on front foot and looking to force matters. It can be daunting when you see a field like the one McCullum had set for him (see above, courtesy of Vaughan's Instagram page). I like the way he is being proactive."

  10. Eng 68-2 (run rate 6.8)published at 14:46 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Joe Root continues his serene progress with a zippy front-foot drive past mid-off for four. A single means Operation Stop Morgan is resumed, with the off side packed and the leg side barer than a student's kitchen cupboard. An inside edge means the two men on the leg side are pressed into action and Morgan gets three. The Root masterclass continues with another gorgeously timed four, and that is England's highest home powerplay score since World War Two. Just kidding - since 2011.

    Stephan Shemilt
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

"Any raised eyebrows at the omission of James Taylor? This is a man who made an unbeaten 98 against a rampant Australia at the start of the World Cup and was England's captain in their last ODI. Mind you, in between he made scores of 0, 17, 25, 1 and 8*, so nothing stellar, albeit being shifted up and down the order. Wasn't it Mark Butcher who stood in as captain for the Test side and was dropped next game?"

  12. Eng 54-2 (Root 30, Morgan 4)published at 14:40 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Brendon McCullum has read Eoin Morgan's mind here - the England skipper favours the off side so McCullum has packed that side with close fielders. Morgan has got a closer security detail than a Hollywood star on walkabout. He manages just a couple of twos.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"This is the way 50 over cricket is played now. You have to go for it for 50 overs. You can't expect a team to suddenly produce consistent results trying to adjust to this style. They need to be given time to develop a brand of no-fear cricket."

  14. Eng 50-2 (run rate 6.25)published at 14:35 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Captain Morgan is the new man. Spectacular fielding by Martin Guptill at point ensures England don't score off the rest of the over.

    Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It was short of length and wide of off stump which means he had to fetch it and got a top-edge. It is a decent catch by Henry but disappointing for England. It shows good intent. It was there to be given a whack. You don't mind it because on other occasions it can come off."

It was all going so well. A single to third man from Root brings up a spirit-lifting 50 partnership off 42 balls, but the optimism is swiftly punctured next ball when Hales mistimes a hook and is pouched by Henry at backward square.

  17. Eng 49-1 (Hales 20, Root 29)published at 14:29 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Root breaks the shackles against Nathan McCullum, stepping down the track and pumping him back over his head for four. Busy running brings a further five runs off the over.

    Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"You get rewards for being positive at the start of the innings. It means the second or third slip that Brendon McCullum likes to put in will be taken out."

  19. Text 81111published at 14:25 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Pete in Greenhithe: A player either has an impact on a match or doesn't. With the greatest of sympathy for Roy I'd rather see him go first ball, than scratch around for 10 overs and go for 15.

Paul Mason: Give the lad a chance, we want attacking cricket, sometimes even Gayle and de Villiers get out early doors. Still plenty in the shed.

Steve, London: Reaction to Roy dismissal is depressing. All the moaning is why we are so stuck playing safe, dull ODI cricket.

  20. Eng 40-1 (Boult 3-0-21-1)published at 14:25 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Boult switches ends. He gets away with a dreadful short and wide delivery which Hales can only toe-end to cover. Hales gets a bit lucky next ball, getting a thick edge which runs through the vacant slip region and away for four.
