"He'll be kicking himself, Ben Stokes, the ball was there to hit. It was high and wide, but what Boult's done well with his short ball is make the England batsmen fetch it from outside off stump."

Argh, Boult strikes again with a short ball that Ben Stokes looks to pull but drags on to his own stumps. England need to be careful now. All this newfound positivity will count for little if they fail to see out the overs.

Dr Jamie Lewis: Cricket must have a disproportionate amount of internationals called Mitchell.

  4. Eng 194-4 (Buttler 7, Stokes 10)published at 16:02 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

He may not be Daniel Vettori, but Mitchell Santner is doing a good job for his side here. Jos Buttler makes room and lofts one into the off side that is dragged back before it can touch the rope. Three runs are the reward. England's momentum has been checked.

"This is the important part of the innings. England got off to an absolute flyer, but Buttler and Stokes just have to regroup while keeping the scoreboard ticking along at a good lick. New Zealand will be looking for wickets."

I've been fortunate in recent weeks to have seen both Ben Stokes' superb 101 at Lord's and Jos Buttler's brutal 71 not out in the Roses match at Headingley. Those innings are a testimony to the ability of these two to seriously go through the gears. Trent Boult is in full-flight, though, and keeps the England pair to just two from the over.

"McCullum has held Santner back until there are two new batsmen at the crease. It just gives him a chance to get used to his surroundings. It's good captaincy."

"Superb knock by Joe Root, but a wasteful way to get out when a huge score was for the taking. New Zealand have an opening."

  9. Eng 188-4 (Buttler 3, Stokes 8)published at 15:55 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Thanks James. Well, I was really looking forward to coming on to write about Eoin Morgan and Joe Root further putting this New Zealand attack to the sword. But those two dismissals are a setback. This is another big test of this new-look England side. The next 25 overs will be revealing. Mitchell Santner is into the attack and is welcomed with a reverse sweep from Ben Stokes to left the ball over short third man and down to the boundary.

  10. Eng 181-4 (run rate 7.24)published at 15:52 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Jos Buttler is the new man. A crucial stage of the innings this, with two new batsmen at the crease. Both terrific stroke-makers on their day of course, but can they keep this rate up? Buttler is off the mark with a single to cover, and with that I hand you over to Phil Dawkes for the glorious march towards 400/depressingly inevitable collapse. Delete as required.

"That is a real shame because he has played so well. Root advanced down the surface and just found the outside egde. A wonderful innings, though. This is the new England."

Ach, curses. Root is gone, the dream of the double hundred dies. He trots down the track, aims a swipe at Boult, and gets a thick edge behind. A magnificent knock from Root, but a really important double whammy for New Zealand.

"Wonderful atmosphere in the stands. The theatre of the Morgan review is followed by a huge cheer for Ben Stokes, then dancing to Madness's One Step Beyond, with a group of bananas leading the way."

Tom Marlow: Joe Root is such a talent!!

Timothy Walker: Great play from Root and superb 100, playing like AB de Villiers today and that is never a bad thing.

Mike Fisher: Now can the middle order capitalise on this glorious start?? Rarely do we get a complete batting performance from England.

  15. Eng 177-3 (Root 104, Stokes 0)published at 15:46 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Root rocks onto the back foot and pulls four through midwicket. Ben Stokes, Hammer of the Kiwis, is the new batsman at the other end.

"He has scored at such a good rate but they have all been good cricket shots. There is a difference between positive and reckless and Root and England have been positive, not reckless. People talk about the new England and this is a great way to start."

Joe Root celebratesImage source, Getty Images

He's there! 100 off 71 balls for Joe Root, the third-fastest ODI century by an England player. An outstanding innings, shots all around the wicket, and he's scored those runs more with effortless timing that brutish power. Went to three figures with two through mid-on. Magnificent.

A magnificent partnership, one of the best I've seen from England in a one-day game in a long time, comes to an end. The DRS shows the ball would have thudded into middle and leg, and Morgan has to go. A good knock, reminiscent of his sparkling best.
