"Not a bad start after the disaster for Roy from the first ball. Root has come in and looked a million dollars. Hales has played some crunching shots through the outfield. England starting to look the part."

Dave Lamb: The negativity around England cricket is astounding at times. Normally by those who haven't got a clue.

Maddy Raman: Despite that first ball shocker you feel unlike the previous era Jason Roy will get another chance to show his talent.

Mark Stevens: Being out first ball doesn't mean a player has no talent, or that the team has failed. It means one batsman has had an off day.

Brendon McCullum turns to brother Nathan to take the pace off the ball and wrest back a bit of control for New Zealand. McCullum's slow tweak immediately proves more difficult to get away, with three nurdled singles all England can muster off the over. Still, this is the highest score that England have attained after five overs of an ODI since 2011.

"Henry's ball was just back of a length, hitting top of off but Root gets on his toes and hits through extra-cover. It is superb timing and the sign of a player who is in great nick and a very good pitch."

  5. Eng 32-1 (run rate 8.0)published at 14:18 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

The runs continue to flow for England, these two are timing the ball beautifully. A perfectly respectable delivery from Henry is creamed to the cover boundary by Root. This looks a good surface, that decision from McCullum at the toss is already beginning to look a little dubious.

"It looks a good pitch this. The ball is coming on nicely. That one to Root for the first four sat up."

Nick, London: There will be failures. If you want to live by the sword but we have a year to the champions trophy so let's back these guys.

Ed in Putney: We want a one day team with players that will express themselves. We back Roy as we believe he has the potential. One low score does not matter! The mindset and the intent is what needs to change!

Trent Boult was the destroyer-in-chief for New Zealand in the Test series and an early wicket means his tail is well and truly up here. Joe Root is eager to assert his authority against the dangerous paceman though, punching him off the back foot through the covers and then driving him wide of mid-off for another boundary. Decent start from this pair.

  9. Eng 16-1published at 14:10 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Alex Hales, who's been in red-hot form for Nottinghamshire, has begun nicely here. Matt Henry is the opening bowler from the other end and Hales cuffs him over point for his first boundary, then drives him beautifully down the ground. England going at eights, on track for 400...

Evan Samuel: What a brave new world we live in... oh, hang on.

Tom Roberts: Exciting new brand of cricket! Time to express themselves! Young, hungry batsmen! A new dawn for England! Caught first ball.

    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

"If you were to look up the word 'anticlimax' in the dictionary, you would see 'Roy c Guptill b Boult 0'. The collective sigh inside Edgbaston was almost comical, those still taking their seats will think they haven't missed much. If you're feeling cynical, you'd say they've missed more of the same."

"I like Root coming in at three because he has gears in his game. He will need to realise he needs to get England into this game and stay busy."

  13. Eng 8-1 (Hales 3, Root 5)published at 14:06 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Joe Root is the new number three and he's quickly into his work, knocking a couple of twos to get up and running. Hales is off the mark with a straight drive off his first ball that is brilliantly hauled in by Brendon McCullum just short of the rope.

"There will be highs and lows in a 'brave new world' and that is definitely a low. It didn't really swing. it was just out there. Maybe he needed to have a look for a few balls?"

Ahem. Not so much a new dawn as an unpleasant 5am wake-up call where you open the curtains and find that it's still pitch black outside. Jason Roy's audition is over after one ball, full and wide and steered uppishly into the safe hands of Martin Guptill at backward point. Plans torn up on the balcony...

"Daniel Vettori is a loss for New Zealand. Anyone who goes for just four runs an over in ODI cricket is essential as it allows other bowlers to attack. If you lose that, the pressure comes back on to the other bowlers. You can't replace that experience and that quality. Santner will be nervous today, but you have to give these players some leeway."

Jason Roy is an exciting talent with the bat and a (excuse the pun) Roy of the Rovers fielder. He was one of those players whose debut in Ireland last month was washed, so this is his first real chance to impress.

He forms part of an exciting new-look opening partnership with Alex Hales. And we're about to get our first look at it...
