A dreadful day yesterday, but hopefully we'll get the full 50 overs in today. Fielding is something England pride themselves on, they want to be dynamic in the field and they've shown that in the first few overs.

  2. Aus 20-0 (Brunt 4-2-11-0)published at 7 overs

BBC Weather's Peter Gibbs told us yesterday to expect "a fresh westerly wind making it feel chilly out in the middle" - well, several Aussie players in the dug-out are huddling beneath white towels, including captain Meg Lanning who's next in. Villani gets lucky as she is inches away from chopping the ball onto her stumps - the tireless Brunt bowls another maiden over.

  3. Aus 20-0 (Shrubsole 3-0-9-0)published at 6 overs

Here's a question. If cows lying down is a portent of rain, does the same apply to ground staff? A posse of what appears to be New Road workers are stretched out just behind the boundary, watching the game. Out in the middle, Shrubsole sends down a couple of wides as she slants the ball across leftie Bolton. No runs off the bat this over though.

All looking pretty good for Australia at the moment, it was a brilliant start by Brunt in the first over but the outfield looks very slow.

  5. Aus 18-0 (Villani 12*, Bolton 6*)published at 5 overs

The Southern Stars have their first boundaries of the day as Villani forces Brunt for four through mid-wicket and shovels another shorter delivery for four more to long leg.

Some running repairs for Nicole Bolton between overs - it looks as though her trousers need a bit of tape after that full-length dive.

And I can confirm that all is well with Katherine Brunt - having accidentally described her as an "eight-arm pace bowler" in the first over, rather than the "right-arm" variety I meant to type... sorry!

Considering this is a reserve day, the crowd isn't too bad.

  8. Aus 10-0published at 4 overs

Villani takes her fourth single of the morning, Bolton has to dive for the crease to make her ground. Shrubsole hasn't quite hit the heights in this series that she did last year when she was player of the tournament in the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh - she took 0-42 at Taunton, 1-41 at Bristol and has 0-7 from two overs today.

  9. Aus 9-0published at 3 overs

After the pasting it took from the rain in the last few days, the New Road outfield is looking a bit slow here - Bolton straight-drives past the diving Brunt and though she caught it well, England cut it off for two.

  11. Aus 6-0 (Villani 2*, Bolton 4*)published at 2 overs

Anya Shrubsole to share the new ball, as usual, from the Diglis End, as the left-handed Nicole Bolton takes guard. Her first ball is jabbed down to Laura Marsh at fine leg for a single, Villani opens her account in similar fashion and when Shrubsole strays onto leg stump again, it's a long chase for Brunt who athletically flips the ball back from the cow corner boundary to keep the score to three. Villani nicks the strike with another single.

  12. Aus 0-0published at 1 over

Gun-barrel straight from Brunt first up, with two slips in, and the Yorkshire right-arm pace bowler completes a maiden over to Villani.

And here's some optimism from TMS's Dan Norcross - if England win today, and win the Test, they retain the Ashes...

Sarah Taylor is normally exceptional behind the stumps, but she's dropped a couple. It makes such a difference when she takes those blinders. England need to step their standards up in the field.

Farrell's got this action where she nips it back in. She's an aggressive bowler, she just keeps coming at you and I think she probably would have been in the side from the start. I'm very surprised that Beams replaces Osborne - Osborne has that control at a slower pace.

Holly Ferling has a long future ahead of her, but Australia need more wicket-taking ability and a little more control. Rene Farrell brings the ball back in, she's consistent and aggressive, and we've seen how England can be vulnerable to the straight ball. I'm surprised Kristen Beams is playing as she bowled a lot of full tosses in the first game - and it's not like she's a young leg-spinner making her way, she's 30.

There's a lot of rain around this morning. We've got to start well with the ball and put Australia under pressure.
