I feel very fortunate to have watched Mitchell Johnson play live over the last few years. We loved to hate him, in a "nice" way of course, but The Ashes won't seem the same without him! Despite all the barracking he'd get from the England supporters, he'd play along with it, smile and still be signing autographs at the end. A legend of the game for sure!

Azhar pushes Woakes into the covers, Joe Root takes a blow on the knee as he bends down at short extra cover, and the batsmen steal a single while he's licking his wounds. In fact, he's not moving too well at all - not a good sign for England's premier batsman - and he hobbles to slip while James Taylor takes his place in the firing line.

  4. Pak 50-1published at 12 overs

Mohammad Hafeez is the new batsman - and having taken that catch in the deep, leg-spinner Adil Rashid has earned himself a bowl. There are already men posted in the deep for Hafeez's first ball, and he carefully threads a two to the cover sweeper. Like England, Rashid had a mixed time of it in the first two ODIs - and Hafeez lofts another two over mid-on to bring up 50 for Pakistan.

"It was a good piece of bowling. We've seen that Babar Azam likes to hit the ball, he's been peppered with bouncers and that time he went for it. It was a good catch by Rashid - he had to back-pedal a bit."

This time the bouncer works for Woakes - Azam is tempted, Andrew Hilditch-style, into a hook shot and it's lifted straight down Adil Rashid's throat on the deep square leg boundary. England have the breakthrough.

"Mitchell Johnson has been saying that he's the last of the 300 club. He was Test player number 398 for Australia, and all the other players in the 300s have retired."

Topley into his fifth over, he lets fly with a full toss but Azam can only deflect it straight to Willey at short fine leg. Two singles from the over, Azhar tries to give Topley the charge but can't connect.

"If the pitch is very slow, you just crave a bit of space to swing your arms. So you want to bowl wicket to wicket as much as you can."

  10. Pak 41-0 (Azhar 19, Azam 20)published at 9 overs

After a single from Azhar, Woakes pings in a bouncer, Azam ducks and the umpire signals an aerial wide. The Pakistan fans are finding their voice as Azam finds a gap in the covers, James Taylor gives chase and they run two. England's players are wearing black armbands today as a mark of respect following last Friday's tragic events in Paris.

Ihtisham Hussein: Last time Pakistan played an ODI at Sharjah they smashed 364-7 in 50 overs. 113 from Ahmed Shehzad, a 26-ball 55 by Shahid Afridi and cameos from the rest. Then bowled out the Kiwis for 217.

It's still Topley from the other end, Azhar is scoring all round the wicket here as he guides a couple of singles down to third man. Both slips have been removed by now, and Babar Azam steers his second boundary of the day through mid-off - earning the TMS commentators a loud blast of music through the PA system.

Toby Barnard: Relieved to see the back of him, but also know the last few Ashes wouldn't have been the same without him.

Fenners: Was at Lord's on day one in '09 when Strauss/Cook put on 190. Mitch was all over the place. Stuart Clark couldn't believe he wasn't picked!

  14. Pak 30-0published at 7 overs

Captain Morgan examines the ball after it's returned by a member of the crowd. Azhar clips a quick single to mid-wicket.

"That shot from Azhar just shows that there isn't a huge amount of swing or seam movement, and you can hit freely through the line of the ball. England will be hoping that remains the case for the rest of the evening."

    Pak 29-0 (Azhar 15, Azam 13)published at 6.3 overs

An early change in the bowling - having kept Willey and Topley going for five overs each in the last game, it's Chris Woakes into the attack - and he gets short shrift as Azhar steps forward and whacks him over his head for a straight six into the stand at long-off.

  17. Pak 22-0published at 6 overs

The Pakistan openers are starting to pick up the singles with a little more ease, on a pitch described as "benign" by Charles Dagnall on TMS. "Fairly slow, fairly easy-paced," he notes.

Edward Pinches: Mitchell Johnson's debut in 2007 and retired. Jimmy's circa 2002. We have got a living legend.

If you're referring to James Anderson, his Test debut was in May 2003, against Zimbabwe. Still, England will be grateful for his longevity.

  19. Pak 20-0published at 5.2 overs

Warm applause from the Pakistan fans in the crowd as Azam cracks Topley for four through cover point. There's then a bit of a comedy moment as Pakistan go for a quick single and Topley collides with non-striker Azhar as he chases the loose ball, and the Pakistan skipper's bat goes flying. Briefly chaos, all appears forgiven.
