Another loose delivery from Willey, as Azam gratefully thrashes it through the covers for a couple. A single brings the skipper back on strike, and he rides his luck as he gets an inside edge which just misses the stumps, nearly chopping on.

  2. Pak 12-0 (Azhar 8, Azam 3)published at 4 overs

Babar Azam adds a single as Topley recovers his composure.

  4. Pak 11-0published at 3.3 overs

Reece Topley won't want to watch this one again. Azhar plays the ball back to him, the tall seamer throws the ball towards the stumps but it flies out of his hand and down to fine leg as Pakistan scamper an unearned single. Topley puts his head in his hands and sinks to his haunches.

  6. Pak 10-0 (Willey 2-0-6-0)published at 3 overs

A bit of a delay - is someone moving behind the bowler's arm - as Willey keeps his line pretty straight, but when he overpitches a little outside off stump, Pakistan captain Azhar is able to glide it through extra cover for four. A single allows him to keep the strike and take his side into double figures.

Thomas Measures: I was at the Sydney Test in 2011 when MJ got a golden duck in the second innings. Incredible five minutes as he came out and went back.

Thomas Knights: Trent Bridge this year. Crowd singing less than complimentary songs about him yet still does autographs for kids with a smile.

  8. Pak 5-0 (Azhar 2, Azam 2)published at 2 overs

It's left-arm seam from both ends as the gangly Reece Topley charges in. He has two slips posted for Azhar - but his first ball is a legside wide. Azhar doubles his score with a single, and Azam shovels a two off his legs, there was a stifled lbw shout but there was bat on that.

"In the second game Willey got a lot more movement with the new ball, but these are different conditions. Today I think we're looking at 250-plus."

  10. Pak 1-0published at 1 over

Azhar Ali pushes the first ball of the match for a single through the covers, bringing his partner Babar Azam on strike against the left-arm seam of David Willey. Azam is a little more cautious in his approach as Willey, with one slip in, completes an economical first over. "The pitch is like a patio," pronounces Aggers on TMS - not a blade of grass on it.
