  1. Eng 67-3 (Vince 29, Morgan 18)published at 10 overs

England continuing to content themselves with one boundary an over, judging - probably correctly - that conserving wickets is more important at this stage. Morgan and Vince extend this crucial partnership to 48.

"That was a very smart shot. He was done for pace, but he timed it well."

That's more like it. He lies in wait for an Imran Khan slower ball and pounces with a meaty pull that travels just over the rope for England's first maximum of the innings. Vince and Morgan pinch a couple of singles off the next two balls.

  4. Eng 56-3 (run rate 6.22)published at 9 overs

Vince is looking strong through the off side - he bludgeons Afridi through the covers for four. England not quite breaking the shackles yet, though - a boundary per over the current rate, and Pakistan will be the happier side as we near the halfway mark.

"Imran Khan is bowling cutters, knowing the ball will sit in the pitch. Morgan waited and helped it on its way. Really good stuff."

  6. Eng 49-3 (Vince 16, Morgan 14)published at 8 overs

Another change for Pakistan, and the new bowler is Imran Khan - not the Imran Khan who played in the Test series, or the legendary captain who later went into politics. Imran number three. This one deals in military-medium left-armers, with a real mix of slower balls. Morgan picks one such delivery and swats it behind square for four.

  8. Eng 43-3 (run rate 6.14)published at 7 overs

The puppetmaster himself, Shahid Afridi, brings himself into the attack to bowl his beguiling, deceptively dangerous brand of leg-tweak. England, who were beginning to race, suddenly hit treacle - just three singles from a crafty over.

  10. Eng 40-3 (Vince 14, Morgan 7)published at 6 overs

Vince is beginning to look good. He crunches Wahab through extra-cover for the third boundary of the over. Suddenly, England have a bit of momentum.

  12. Eng 34-3published at 5.3 overs

Wahab Riaz, so impressive in the Test series, enters the attack to quicken England heart-rates just a little more. Morgan square-cuts him for four, but next ball he nearly perishes as he tries to work one into the leg side and gets a leading edge that loops tantalisingly just over midwicket's head. Vince swivel-pulls Wahab for four off the next ball.

"Vince is not exclusively an off-side player, but he does like to give himself room and hit that way."

  14. Eng 25-3 (Vince 5, Morgan 1)published at 5 overs

Morgan gets off the mark with a single to deep square and then Vince eases the pressure with a much-needed boundary, a drive splitting cover and mid-off.

  16. Eng 20-3published at 4.3 overs

Pakistan are menacing now, on their toes, that walk-in on the bowler's delivery giving the batsman the feeling of the infield constricting around them. Vince eventually gets off the mark with a swat into the leg side.

Imogen: If we rest our best players we have to accept that the inexperience may let us down - collapses in the middle are our speciality.

Rory Burling: Andrew Strauss says he's going to take white ball cricket more seriously. What does this team say about that? Retrograde.

  18. Eng 19-3 (run rate 4.75)published at 4 overs

Captain Eoin Morgan comes in and blocks out his first ball. These two have a heck of a rebuilding job to do.

Moeen Ali, given a rare chance to bat up the order today, has blown it. He slaps Tanvir tamely to cover and England sink further into the mire.
