We think that Hashim Amla is just waiting to speak to the media to confirm his resignation. There is nothing official from Cricket South Africa yet.

Just to reiterate, we've not had this confirmed just yet, but it seems that Hashim Amla's resignation is currently circulating around Newlands. Alastair Cook has just been asked about it in his post-match media conference.

That's a helluva tweet from TMS, isn't it? Reports from South Africa are saying that Hashim Amla has quit as Test captain. What a story that would be in the middle of the series.

It's usually the England captain who goes when these two meet isn't it?

Stephen Cummins: Don't panic, still 1-0 up after two tests away against the number one test side. We'd have taken that.

Mike Crew: Only England could score 629 and end up relying on the weather to save the match!

England captain Alastair Cook on Sky Sports: "It wasn't ideal, but it's amazing what can happen when the pressure is off one side. It was a bit like how we played against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

"Over the last 10 days of cricket, we've had some really good ones. We probably bowled when the wicket was flattest and we still created chances, but we have to take those chances.

"Steven Finn bowled beautifully, probably our most threatening bowler. Everyone bowled pretty well, but South Africa deserve credit because they batted well under pressure.

"It's a bit frustrating because it hasn't clicked for me on this tour. I'll have a couple of days off, then work hard for Johannesburg."

Man of the match Ben Stokes: "When I started going we had a good score anyway. I thought we had quite a lot runs, so that if I got out it wouldn't be the worst thing. I started going for my shots and it paid off.

"I'd done some work with my technique, but the main part of my game is 'see ball, hit ball'

"Credit to Jonny. The way he went about his innings was amazing. You can never take that hundred away from him. It's a result of the work he's out in over the past year or so."

More from Hashim Amla: "It was nice to get some runs again. It's one of the best places in the world to play and we were pleased to see so many supporters here.

"Bavuma's innings was exceptional. He's been under pressure with people doubting his place in the team but he's got real talent and we're all pleased the way he showed that."

South Africa captain Hashim Amla: "Stokes and Bairstow batted extremely well but for us to claw our way back the way we did was pleasing. We gave them some chances but that's the way it goes.

"The next two matches should be really exciting. Both teams are evenly matched but we've got more positives to take into the next match."

Bryony Lever: Crafty but not wise from Jonny Bairstow. I crawled under the covers once and got trodden on.

  19. Postpublished at 15:14

England captain Alastair Cook: "It was a little bit nervous. It's amazing when only one side can win it, the pressure is all on one side. South Africa bowled well. It would have been really disappointing to bat out the day.

"On the first day it was a really good cricket wicket, but the pace slowly died. The partnership between Stokes and Bairstow accelerated the game. It was outstanding, a privilege to watch.

"The bowlers put the ball in really good areas. We played against some really good batting. To get 600 when you have conceded 600 is a really good effort from them. It might have been different had we taken our chances."
