    Root lbw b Tahir 27 (Eng 76-2)

That's out. No doubt about it - three reds and Joe Root trudges off.

We'll let you know when umpire Johan Cloete gets a decision right one way or the other.

He's having an LvG (a shocker!).

"That the umpire has given it not out is no great consolation to Root at the moment. I think it's got quite a lot going for it."

    Eng 76-1

Imran Tahir gets one to slide into Joe Root's pads. The umpire shakes his head, but Tahir persuades his captain with the enthusiasm of a little boy in a sweep shop.

"Please can I review it, Dad?"

It looks close to me. And it's Root, so well worth a gamble.

"It's another good short delivery from South Africa. You do feel that if this series was going on for two or three more matches that he'd be getting a lot more short stuff."

  5. Eng 73-1 (Hales 35, Root 26)published at 13 overs

Joe Root continues to take on the short ball, hooking Kyle Abbott and the ball lands just short of a tumbling Imran Tahir at third man. Root shrugs his shoulders in an apologetic way and chuckles to his strike partner.

    "Phew, that was close."

"Nah mate, it was Imran Tahir. Safe shot."

"When Roy whacked the boundary cushion, is that something that might cost him some cash when the match referee sees it?"

  7. Eng 65-1 (SA won toss)published at 12 overs

A single into the leg side brings up the 50 partnership off 42 balls. Joe Root likes such milestones and smiles warmly at Alex Hales. Aww.

With the field spread, Kyle Abbott digs in another short ball to Joe Root but the England man has got his eye in now and he gets well over the ball and hooks a single to the boundary sweeper.

Abbott's bouncer doesn't have the same venom as that of Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada. Hales sways out of the way with the manner of a man faced with a grass snake after crossing a field full of mambas.

    No problem.

"I think Morris can be come a lot more consistent in international cricket. You can see that he can bat, but he needs to work on where he lands when he bowls. Some deliveries he will push down the leg side because he falls away in his action."

Allan Donald would be proud of this spell Chris Morris has produced. Fast, furious and pretty darn accurate. He bowls a brilliant yorker which Alex Hales somehow deflects for four past the keeper. The Notts man then latches on to a poor ball to smear four through the covers.

And, as Hales' reward, the ground PA system belts out some Beyonce. 'Single Ladies', if you're wondering.

  14. How's stat?published at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2016

Joe Root has scored 341 runs in this series, only Kevin Pietersen (454 in 2005) has scored more in an ODI series against South Africa for England. 27 more runs would see Root overtake his personal record for most runs in a series (367 v Sri Lanka in 2014).

  15. Eng 50-1 (SA won toss)published at 9 overs

It's a good job Jason Roy didn't review his lbw earlier, or Alex Hales would have been up the creek without a paddle.

Roy, by the way, hit the boundary pads when he walked off after being dismissed. If only you'd hit the ball, eh Jason?

He ends the series with 96 runs at less than 20.

Root could get more than that today, bringing up the England 50 with a hook for four.

"Hales was miles away from that. It's unbelievable how far he is away from hitting that, one of the most incredible caught decisions you'll ever see. That was the king of howlers."

  18. Eng 44-1published at 7.5 overs

What a terrible decision. Alex Hales hit the ground and was closer to the non-striker than hitting the ball. Well, not quite... but you get my jist.

Alex Hales is given out caught behind. But he's not sure, and reviews it. Chris Morris, the bowler, didn't appear convinced either.
