"De Villiers got 35 of his runs in his last eight deliveries. That is probably the critical innings. He has assured, you would think, that South Africa will get past 200."

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 17.3 overs

De Villiers c Noor Ali b Nabi 64 (SA 173-4)

It was fun while it lasted, but De Villiers is finally out, caught on the boundary attempting to pull Nabi for another maximum. What a magnificent innings though.

  3. 6 runs

    SA 173-3published at 17.1 overs

Hard hats please. It's raining sixes here. AB ramp-sweeps Nabi over fine leg for his fifth six.

"Poor Rashid. It is brilliant batting. It wasn't the worst over I've ever seen but there were some amazing shots. He is still a good bowler in my book but he has been cruelly assaulted."

  5. De Villiers hits 29 off the overpublished at 17 overs

    SA 167-3

And again! This time he golf-drives it down the ground. 28 off five balls...the final ball is patted away for a single. That's the seventh most expensive over in the history of T20 international cricket.

  6. 50 runs

50 for De Villierspublished at 16.4 overs

    SA 154-3

There's another one! Full from Rashid, launched into orbit somewhere over midwicket by De Villiers. That's his 50 off 24 balls...

  7. 6 runs

    SA 148-3published at 16.3 overs

Here we go! De Villiers hammers a drag-down from Rashid into the stands at midwicket, next ball he's nearly caught by the man running in on the boundary, then Rashid goes full and he smashes him down the ground for another maximum.

There's a woman in the crowd holding a banner that says 'Amazing Brilliant De Villiers', with the first letters highlighted to read 'ABDV'. How would we describe JP Duminy in acrostic form? Jolly Proficient? Jauntily Professional? Just Perfect?

A very decent over from Nabi, giving the batsmen no pace to work with and keeping them to singles. South Africa have to go big now, surely?

"Afghanistan are trying to move the fielders around, to get the most mobile in the right areas. But De Villiers probably knows each of their mobility levels as well. He is looking ominous now."

  11. SA 131-3published at 15 overs

Clever from De Villiers, paddling Shenwari round the corner and finding the third-man boundary. But he should have been gone next ball! Driven uppishly straight back at the fielder but Shenwari can't get his hands up in time. You don't want to be giving this man an extra life...

"De Villiers' mind is like a GPS. He seems to know, without looking up, exactly where the fielders are and he picks the exact spot between them."

  13. SA 122-3 (De Villiers 20, Duminy 10)published at 14 overs

Rashid blots his copybook. Duminy whips him into the gap at long-on, then De Villiers slog-sweeps powerfully and perfectly bisects the two boundary riders on the off side.

  14. SA 110-3published at 13 overs

ABDV swats Shenwari to the long-on boundary. Fast running collects a couple of twos and turns it into a good over for South Africa.

"I think a lot of these fans are hear because AB is batting and the PA man is playing a lot of their favourite tunes. They get to watch quality batting and get a music concert."

  16. SA 99-3 (run rate 8.25)published at 12 overs

JP Duminy is the new man. He pushes a single down the ground. Afghanistan have slowed South Africa's charge here.

"It was not an elegant shot. It was a wide-ish ball and De Kock swung at it. He was caught off the toe of the bat. It ended up jammed between the keeper's substantial thighs, not the gloves. The innings has not subsided but it is not racing along."

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.4 overs

    De Kock c Shehzad b Hamza 45 (SA 97-3)

What a wicket this is! It's the dangerman, De Kock, and it's a brilliant catch from Shahzad! De Kock swings hard, gets a little under edge, and Shahzad somehow takes it between his thighs. Big wicket!

"It is not the mayhem we witnessed the other night. De Villiers might want to take a bit of time to get himself a score. Afghan spinners are as good a combination - if perhaps you take India out - as I have seen among any of the nations."

I like the way you've not even tried to draw any cricketing analogies there, Mike. Is there a Test cricket/T20 comparison hiding in there? Tell you what though, I think you've unfairly maligned the Backstreet Boys there. Yes, they had the looks (swoon), but they also had slick choreography and killer tunes like 'I Want It That Way' and 'Shape Of My Heart'. What McCartney would give to have written those...

Anyway, back to the cricket, and that's a good over from the leg-spinner Shenwari, just a single apiece for QDK and ABDV.
