Close! Joe Root would have been gone had Badree's throw hit. Indecision between the batsmen, Root not even in the frame.

Dwayne Bravo is back to bowl his all-sorts, but a full-toss is belted back down the ground by Root, through the hands of Andre Russell and for four. In the Mumbai night, England are bumping along at about eight an over, so a bit of acceleration will have them around 180. Enough to keep them out of the reach of Christopher Henry Gayle?

"There are times when you watch Jos Butler and think you can't play without him. This is a good opportunity for him to impress the locals - because this is where he'll play in the IPL. More importantly he wants to play a good innings in an England victory, which is looking like a strong likelihood at just over halfway through this innings."

Buttler actually has the luxury of having a look for a couple of balls. He's happy to take the single on offer for the moment. England will want him ready to hit the burners from the 14th or 15th over.

    It is Jos Buttler. Seatbelts.

"Alex Hales was almost yorked there, it was a really quick ball. Technically it was a left-arm spinner, but it zipped in. Hales played OK but he never really got in on the act did he?"

    Hales b Benn 28 (Eng 92-2)

Bowled him! Alex Hales goes, yorked by the menacing figure of Sulieman Benn. The spinner spears it in from a great height, underneath the jam of Hales, who departs after a 26-ball stay. The end of a very good stand for England and a much needed wicket for the Windies.

Over in Bangalore, West Indies are struggling a little against Pakistan - they're only made 51-3 from the first 11 overs, with the big-hitting Deandra Dottin out for a duck. Captain Stafanie Taylor is still there on 26 not out.

  14. Eng 92-1 (Root 38 from 26)published at 11 overs

Joe Root is dreamy here, and I'm not talking about his boyish good looks. Wristy whips through the leg side, back-foot power on the off. A very, very good phase of the game for England. I'd wager that Jos Buttler has his pads on and is ready to come in next.

"You can't call that a slog. Joe Root clipped it with beautiful timing. So long as Root doesn't try to hit the ball too hard he is so dangerous."

Oh, hello! Joe Root takes a trip into the stands, flicking a maximum off his hips. England moving towards a very strong position.

"With England at 81-1 from 10 overs, you're thinking they could well still get another 100 from the last 10 overs. But it doesn't happen automatically..."

  18. Eng 81-1 (partnership 44)published at 10 overs

Badree again, the first of what could be five overs of spin in the final 11. England run well to take a couple in the deep, with Badree missing his length to allow some milky placement. All this running is causing the men in pink to perspire, with sweat glistening off their arms. Halfway.

Theo Bowyer: 175 is a must on this wicket and England look well set. On another note every Jason Roy dismissal is a carbon copy... Tame.

  20. Eng 74-1 (Hales 26, Root 24)published at 9 overs

Carlos Brathwaite, a pacer I've not seen a great deal of, is on, kicking his heels into a straight run-up. Variations to Hales, another tattooed cricketer, before Root plays the sort of slog that would make Geoffrey Boycott's mother cry. Four to the total, though. Pretty even this. England have a platform, but wickets would have the Windies on top.
