"It is amazing how many runs you can get from just ticking things over. I still feel it is balanced. This is going to be a good one."

  2. NZ 81-3 (target 144)published at 12 overs

All sorts happening out there. New Zealand look to pinch an overthrow, Satterthwaite almost run out at the non-striker's end. The running hasn't been great - Satterthwaite was more interested in fiddling with her gloves. There's been no boundary for four overs.

  3. NZ 74-3 (target 144)published at 11 overs

Fletcher is turning her leggies - into leftie Satterthwaite and away from right-hander McGlashan. More single for the Kiwis, four of them. The rate nudges towards an eight an over. They won't want it much higher than that.

"New Zealand are up with the rate. West Indies are going to have to keep it under four or five an over here because New Zealand, at the rate they're going and experience, they could just creep over the line."

  5. NZ 70-3 (target 144)published at 10 overs

New Zealand can take comfort from the experience of McGlashan. She's made over 200 appearances for the White Ferns - more than any other player. Gaps being found, running hard, ones and twos. Claps and chat from the Windians. The win predictor has them at 65%.

  6. NZ 64-3 (target 144)published at 9 overs

Trouble for the Kiwis, trouble on the live text desk as my ham and cheese bagel falls apart. Expect a lot of spin from now on, more loopy leggies from Afy Fletcher. Singles the order of the day. Five of them.

Ralph Brooker: Suzie Bates' wicket. Terrible blow for Black Caps ladies.

  8. NZ 59-3 (target 144)published at 8 overs

What are the Kiwis made of? They've not been tested in this tournament, but now they are in a real scrap. Can they recover against the Windian spinners? Sara McGlashan and Amy Satterthwaite have to do the rebuilding. Oooh, nice from McGlashan, lapping for four. Still plenty in this.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7 overs

    Bates c Quintyne b Fletcher 12 (NZ 49-3)

Oh wow. Huge, huge wicket, one that puts West Indies right in control of this game. New Zealand skipper Suzie Bates gets a leading edge to Afy Fletcher and is held at mid-off. Two wickets in the over, Kiwis under the cosh.

  11. NZ 49-2published at 6.4 overs

The replay makes that bit of fielding from Dottin look even better. She was totally off balance, with about one and a half stumps to aim at. Is that Dottin again? This time it's awful, miles away from the target and away for four overthrows. They say cricket is a great leveller...

"Wow, what a bit of fielding. Dottin always likes to be in the game. She is rapid, one of the quickest players out there, threw in a flash with that bullet arm."

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 6.1 overs

Devine run out 22 (NZ 43-2)

Gone! Sophie Devine is on her way, done by a direct hit from the cover ring be Deandra Dottin. The Kiwis have had a few close calls, and this time Devine comes a cropper. Big wicket for the Windies.

Must be out. Direct hit. Windies celebrating...

Jay: What a catch that would've been by Matthews!

  16. NZ 42-1 (target 144)published at 6 overs

The reprieved Bates celebrates by playing a gorgeous cover drive, the shot of the day so far. Mathews, long curly hair tamed by a cap, bounds in and continues to loop it down. There's shadows just creeping across the ground. You can't help but wonder how lively it will be later on.

"A brilliant attempt. It has been smashed. For all the world I thought Hayley Matthews had it. A brilliant piece of reaction fielding."

  18. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 5.1 overs

    NZ 37-1

Oooohhh, this would have been a screamer. Hayley Mathews on to bowl her off-breaks, the first ball drilled back at her by Bates. She dives low to her left, sticks out a hand, but can't cling on. Almost a worldie.

  19. NZ 37-1published at 5 overs

Still Connell, still banging it in, but now width for this pair of Kiwi batters to free their arms. Merissa Aguilleira, keeping without headwear, bangs her gloves together to encourage her team-mates. Better over from the Windies, only five from it.
