    Thirimanne c Root b Finn 16 (SL 118-9)

Finn is wrapping this up in rapid fashion. He wasn't Sri Lanka's last hope (that went a long time ago) but Thirimanne was the last recognised batsman. He chases a swinging ball and edges to Root at second slip. It was a tame. weak dismissal. It has been a tame, weak couple of days from Sri Lanka.

"Short is in a slightly strange position, behind square. If he'd been in the conventional position, Chameera would have been fine. Compton was probably there for the fended ball, rather than the bat pad, which is what that was."

    Chameera c Compton b Finn 0 (SL 117-8)

This isn't going to last long is it? After being handed strike against Finn by Thirimanne, Dushmantha Chameera tentatively prods at his first ball and edges it on to his pad and them up to Nick Compton at short leg.

Here come the England players. Three wickets needed for victory. Time to wrap this thing up.

I don't think there is a batting line-up in world cricket right now that could cope with what Jimmy Anderson has been putting down today (or indeed over the last two days).

It is like the ball is on remote control such is his mastery of the swing. His match bowling figures currently stand at 24.4-11-44-9. Utter class.

    Lancashire v Derbyshire

We might not have an awful lot of cricket left to play at Headingley, but never fear for on t'other side of the Pennines there is a Twenty20 Blast encounter taking place between Lancashire and Derbyshire.

You can follow commentary of that match here.

Cheers Steph. Well, that escalated quickly. Finn nearly killed a guy. Well... he hit Herath on the elbow and softened him up before dismissing him.

Looks like we won't be here too much longer after this awkwardly-timed tea.

Right, I feel I've rather broken the back of that innings. Finisher Phil Dawkes is here to talk you through what we expect to be the end of this match.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"The quality of swing and pace bowling from Broad and Anderson has been superb. It has felt like that Ashes Test at Trent Bridge where it feels like a wicket is going to fall every ball.

"One player - Mendis - has come out with the a positive attitude but the rest have played like in the first innings by being defensive and nicking one. The only thing you can do is look to be aggressive as there is a ball with your name on it at some point."

Are the umpires keen for a brew? Those bails were off before 16:40 for my money. In the hour or so of cricket we managed in the afternoon, England sprinted towards victory. This one will be done tonight.

Richard Higgins: Played and missed at 12, nicked 1, hit on the arm and lobs one to cover. Painful all round for Herath!

  14. SL 116-7published at 16:39

If Herath was as high as eight, it doesn't say a great deal about what is to come. Dushmantha Chameera is the new man, watching as Thirimanne uppercuts Broad over the slips for four. Stick or twist from Thirimanne? The next time he loses the strike could be his last. From the final ball he gets the single that protects that will see him keep the strike.

"A soft dismissal. Herath's weight was all on the back foot. He timed it well but straight to Broad at cover."

Softened up, then dismissed next ball. Rangana Herath is bruised and out. Did he not fancy it any more? No feet to a full ball, patting Steven Finn straight to Stuart Broad at mid-off. England could be through this lower order like a hot curry.

Eeeesssshhhhh. That will hurt. Back arm, where there's no protection. Looks like a bony part. The physio is out and Herath is having a drink. That's his bowling arm too.

New bowler, same result. Herath continues to grope for the ball like a man searching for his car keys in the dark. The ECB say Ben Stokes is still getting treatment at the ground and will provide more info tonight. Hello, where's that hit Herath? In the gut? He's got his hands on his knees....
