  1. SL 93-5 (Anderson 10-3-25-3)published at 15:57

It was a curious dismissal. The ball before, Mendis was able to withdraw the bat. This time, some extra bounce and away nip leapt up to take the willow, with the ball bouncing down on to the timber. New man Dasun Shanaka, looking to avoid a pair on debut, is beaten. And it's raining...

We're in very serious danger of having to go to the garden centre tomorrow. Kusal Mendis, the only Sri Lankan to have any batting success in the match, is gone, unable to withdraw the bat from James Anderson and plays on. The tourists are once again looking more flimsy than wet toilet paper.

"Quality from Broad. He struggled earlier in the day for rhythm and length but he has found it now. He is just kissing that surface and getting it through to Bairstow. He is shaping it to the right-handers."

Looking again, Mathews doesn't need to play, but he's undone by the angle that Broad creates. Slightly wider on the crease, creating the illusion that the batsmen needs to play when the ball would actually have missed the stumps. Fast bowling - not just brainless charging in, there's some very sophisticated slight of hand. Lahiru Thirimanne is the new man,

"It is good bowling. It is the angle to create that ball. It draws Mathews into playing. The batsman will be disappointed, though, as he will realise he could have left it."

    Mathews c Bairstow b Broad 5 (SL 93-4)

Big wicket! England remove the Sri Lanka captain and the chances of this one being done and dusted tonight are raised considerably. It's nothing more than a good line from Stuart Broad, drawing Angelo Mathews into a defensive poke, with some away nip enough to take the edge. Jonny Bairstow pouches catch number eight.

"It is looking OK at the moment. It is grey and cloudy but there is no rain in the air. Sri Lanka are trying to extend this but their tail did look rather long yesterday."

There's some outstanding tomfoolery going on in the Western Terrace, with a fox being chased by jodhpured-up hunters, the last of which is trying to carry a pint and some chips. The trumpeter joins in with the Great Escape. On the field, Anderson is causing Mathews all sorts of problems with inswingers that could hoop around corners.

I've just seen a replay of Trevor Bayliss giving a team talk before England came back out after the delay. Rare for TB to be that animated, especially in public. Perhaps he was dishing out a rocket for some sloppiness in the first session. Mathews pokes at Broad and is fortunate to see an edge go through third man for four.

Tough school in the England team. Moeen Ali was on to allow some end-switching and, even though he got a wicket, he's still yanked from the attack. Stuart Broad...

In all that. Kusal Mendis has played nicely. His area has been through mid-on and he drives for four in that region to bring up his maiden Test half-century. After the tourists were rolled last evening, Mendis has stood up and grafted through.

"The seamers that have bowled from the Kirkstall Lane end today have really struggled. They have found it difficult to find a length or get the ball around off stump."

  16. SL 79-3published at 15:35

You can feel it again. That expectancy that every ball could bring a wicket. Every propulsion of the red leather spells danger for the men in blue helmets. The crowd are up, roaring Anderson in, Mendis prodding and lucky one that takes the shoulder doesn't fall into English hands. Then a rozzer, in-dip and nip away from Jimmy to beat the outside edge. Be ready...

  17. SL 79-3 (Moeen 1-0-2-1)published at 15:34

That's spot-on from Michael Vaughan. The cut is such a dangerous shot against the off-spinner. Looking again, it wasn't even that short, Chandimal was trying to force a ball that wasn't there. It barely bounced to waist height. Angelo Mathews the new man, the skipper with a big job on his hands.

"The first thing you are taught facing off-spin is not to cut. Play with a straight bat. Chandimal went for the cut and played on to the stumps. It has given England a chance of winning the game today. It was a shot of someone who is not quite mentally on it."

This is absolutely village from Dinesh Chandimal. Following-on, first over after a three-hour break, Moeen Ali bowling for the first time in the match. Rank long hop, Chandimal trying to cut an off-spinner turning back towards him, under-edging on to his stumps. Ruddy awful.
