Steve Wilkinson: "'There's a cheer in the Western Terrace. 6 butchers are chasing a pig'. Classic Yorkshire cricket fancy dress."
Stuart Broad to Rangana Herath. Play-and-miss count gets to nine before Herath somehow jams down on a delivery that is near-yorker length, squeezing it between fourth slip and gully for four. Weather overhead much brighter, threat of rain reduced.

"If you haven't faced this quality of swing bowling before then what hope have you got in these conditions at Headingley? You have to play the ball so late. If you haven't faced these conditions before you commit to the shot."
Anderson has half of Yorkshire in the slip cordon and is being roared in by the other half. Not only does his inducker threaten Thirimanne's most sensitive of areas, but the bounce zips the ball past the shoulder of the bat. There are about 15 minutes to go until tea.

"I can't remember the last time I watched England bowl when you feel like a wicket could fall with every delivery. It has been like that since they started bowling yesterday."
As some butchers chase a pig, Broad gets too straight to Thirimanne. At least the single gives him a go at Herath. For some reason, Paul Farbrace has put his hood up and pulled the strings, leaving only his eyes visible. Snorter from Broad, Herath having to jack-knife backwards. I'll be honest, Herath doesn't look like getting bat on any of these. It would fairer to let him hit it with a door.

"Jonny Bairstow is now one catch away from joining AB de Villiers as the only player to score a century and take 10 catches in a Test match."
It was just classic awayswing bowling. Whippy angle in, dip away, Shanaka fencing at the ball with the bat away from his body. The debutant has been given a thorough lesson by one of the greatest movers of a cricket ball the game has ever seen. Rangana Herath is the new man. We're officially into the tail - and the sun has come out.

"Brilliant from Jimmy Anderson. He hasn't changed anything, he just draws him into the shot. Anderson knows he just has to keep plugging away outside off stump."
Shanaka c Bairstow b Anderson 4 (SL 101-6)
It had to happen. Dasun Shanaka was being tormented by James Anderson's hooping, S-shaped awayswing. The feather behind was inevitable. Anderson has nine in the match, Jonny Bairstow has the same number of catches. Only the weather will stop England today.

I've heard reports of spitting rain, the sort that Peter Kay uses in his act. Broad, bouncy blond hair, gallops in to Shanaka, a shortish figure behind an armguard. We've gone 15 minutes without a wicket. It feels like a lifetime.
Sam Sheringham

"Things you only see on an English Test match Saturday: two rival groups of huntsmen in red blazers and black riding hats, a posse of super-heroes queuing for coffee and cakes, and two portly middle-aged stormtroopers looking like they'd struggle to tie their own shoelaces, let alone protect the Empire."
Dasun Shanaka avoids a pair, stabbing Anderson through point for a couple. Still, with Sultan of Swing Anderson defying physics, Shanka looks about as comfortable as a man who accidentally wore his wife's underwear. In the crowd, a man wrapped in a Sri Lanka flag is in need of some sympathy.
Broad is round the wicket to left-hander Thirimanne, torturing him with indecision over whether to play or not. When he does decide to put bat to ball, a backfoot drive is sent away with a flourish. Is it still raining? Hard to tell.

Bryony Lever: Not gonna lie, I'm rooting for Sri Lanka a bit. This match will be over before we know it. It's like the weather. Washed out.
Peter Barleycorn: Anderson or Bairstow for MOTM? Not a call I'd like to make.
Jonathan Everett: Did Broad & Anderson book a game of golf on Monday during the rain delay?
We're staying on for now. Tea, remember, is scheduled for 16:40. Yesterday Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for 14 runs. England will feel that one more wicket here has them in the chicken coop.

"Jonny Bairstow is the first Englishman to get a century and eight dismissals in the same match."
