Looking again, that was a sharp snaffle from Anderson. He was standing close at a fine gully position and the ball went quickly to him. He almost had to grab it as it went past. Shaminda Eranga is the new man...

"Great delivery, Broad really bent his back, it climbed on Herath and Anderson made the catch look like he was plucking apples off a tree. Not really Herath's job to be fending it off like that."

    Herath c Anderson b Broad 12 (SL 88-7)

Late strike for England! Stuart Broad produces some magic at the end of the day to break Rangana Herath's resistance. Round the wicket, extra bounce, Herath can only fend to James Anderson at gully. England might even fancy getting another before the close now.

"England have rather gone though the motions for the last 20 minutes, it's been that sort of day. I might have given Stokes a little bowl... err, I mean Woakes!"

  5. SL 88-6published at 18:23

James Anderson is summoned to give England some late cheer, but even he is being rebuffed by Thirimanne, who is digging a trench. Anderson's pace down at 77mph. I suspect both sides would be happy to start again tomorrow now. Maybe two or three overs to go.

Some Beach Boys in the crowd, followed by something that is completely unrecognisable. It's that time when you start singing a song, forget the lyrics, then slip into gibberish. Soon it will be leaning on the man next to you and declaring your love. Shot! Herath hooks a Broad bumper for four.

"This is the longest Sri Lankan partnership in the series, it's into its 13th over."

A bit of Frankie Valli from the crowd ask Moeen rips an offie past the grope of Herath. Hello, what's Stuart Broad doing at gully? You don't often see that. Herath remains stoic. Maybe one more blast from James Anderson before the close?

With all this careful batting, it's almost like a Test has broken out. Thirmanne and Herath have dug in, blunting the England attack in what are pretty reasonable conditions in which to bat. They'll have every right to return to the dressing room and ask the rest of the order what they were playing at.

After all that, the ball was missing leg stump. Still, it was worth the review just to listen to Rod Tucker. In fact, can we get Rod in the TMS box please?
