Now then. If this has hit Herath on the foot first, he's in trouble. If it's all bat, he's fine. Moeen the bowler....

"Somebody was saying to me that Cook might not enforce the follow-on. Maybe he just wants those five runs for his 10,000!"

Indeed it is Stuart Broad, the huge fast bowler towering over Rangana Herath, who just about manages to peer over the stumps. Broad round the wicket, homing in on the toes, Herath dancing like a cowboy who has had a bullet fired at his feet. Stout defence. This partnership is worth 12 runs in 11 overs.

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Rangana Herath has 203 Test wickets in Sri Lanka at an average of 24.58 - compared to 97 abroad at 41.48, he clearly prefers playing at home.

"James Anderson, by comparison, has taken 278 at home at 25.91, and 167 abroad at 32.98, there's not quite such a disparity."

There are 14 overs left in the day after Moeen finishes twirling his beard towards Thirimanne, who is defending behind an armguard and a big front pad. Moeen is giving it a good rip, but there's no real turn. Stuart Broad is getting loose.

From the madness of the time when Sri Lanka lost five wickets for 23 runs, this all seems rather sedate. It's almost like we've strayed into the realms of proper Test cricket. Runs are an endangered species, mind. That might be the case when Cook summons one of Broad or Anderson for another spell. Still, I think it's now only 50-50 over whether England will win this one tonight....

Luke Curtis: Jimmy Anderson's average in the last 2 years: 21.48, largely against the best teams, best bowler in the world?

James Beeching: When was the last time a nightwatchman was employed? Sri Lanka have a team of day giveaway-ers! Woeful!

Spin for the first time, Rangana Herath breathing a sigh of relief now he has Moeen Ali, rather than pace to deal with. Moeen asks the question when one skids on, but that's heading down the leg side. Herath has survived without too many problems - why were the top order not able to manage that?

The yellow coats from a holiday camp at Crimpton-on-Sea dance in the crowd as Finn pads in, causing Thirimanne to jack-knife backwards. Question. What was the thinking behind dressing up as the cast of Hi-de-Hi? It seems a bit niche. Scoreboard barely moving, Sri Lanka stuck in concrete.

"Sri Lanka had some high quality players in Malinga, Sangakkara and Jayawardene - but we just want to see some fight from this side."

Woakes round the wicket as a song wafts from the crowd, asking the question when Herath shuffles too far across. That's going down the leg side. More jumpiness from Herath, who looks like he could be spooked by his own shadow. Must be time for a bowling change soon.

"There's some light sunshine, the light is good, but Sri Lanka are just not accomplished enough in their technique."

I've heard rumours of some rain in the south, but it's quite glorious in the north. Finn, like a drummer without a stick, continues his search for rhythm, making Herath hop about. The short number eight is dogging it out, supporting Thirimanne, who has looked solid.

Ian Butler: 67-6 chasing 498. This has to be as poor a Sri Lanka side as has ever turned out for a Test series.

Len Morrison: Compared to the side with all-time greats like Sangakkara and Jayawardene, this Sri Lankan team is truly pathetic.

Josh Pewter: So I have a ticket for the 4th day of the Test at Lord's. Unless the first two days are rained off its looking highly unlikely.

I'm enjoying the pictures, especially the dogs at cricket. I've got quite a few friends who play cricket. They think if they text me pictures I can put them in the live text. It doesn't work like that. More Woakes, big shadow to his right, angled across Thirimanne, who defends. The threat feels like it has receded. Time for some spin?

In contrast to Chris Woakes, Steven Finn looks short of rhythm, running in like a man carefully treading on a frozen lake. Lahiru Thirimanne the last recognised batsman (and I use the term loosely), finally gets the scoreboard moving once more.
