Lovely sunshine in Durham, Chester-le-Street has done all it can to make the Lankans feel at home. Chris Woakes, so often below his best in Test cricket, is charging in, bowling with some real nip. Herath, at least a place too high at eight, is half an hour late on a cut shot.

"You can imagine, even if this pair somehow bat for the rest of the day, and are all out by lunch tomorrow, England might still bat again to give their bowlers a rest. There would be some anger up here, Aggers would set the dogs on them!"

I think the players took drinks at the fall of the wicket, which brought Rangana Herath to the crease. Looking again at the Siriwardana wicket, he was completely squared up. Even if it did keep low, he gave himself no chance of being in position to play it. There are 23 overs or 70ish minutes left in the day. Sri Lanka batting again tonight?

"It did keep slightly low compared to the one that got Mendis, but a faint edge to Jonny Bairstow, and Sri Lanka could be batting again before the close of play. All of a sudden, the bowlers who were looking forward to getting their shorts on and getting a massage are having to pad up."

I'm sorry, this just isn't good enough. The mitigation for Milinda Siriwardana is that it might have kept a touch low, but where's he playing it from? The delivery is outside the off stump, yet the left-hander looks to be heading for square leg. He's gone for a blob, Chris Woakes has two in the over and Sri Lanka are crumbling like a poppadom.

Looking again, it really was a brute of a delivery from Woakes. Mendis looked to be lining it up well, by it jumped higher than Michael Jordan to take the shoulder of the bat, presenting Anderson with the simplest of catches. Milinda Siriwardana is the new man. After this, England are in the ferrets...

"Lovely bit of bowling, back of a length, it bounced far more than they've done so far and took the shoulder of the bat. A big wicket for England as it was Mendis who held the innings together at Headingley."

    Mendis c Anderson b Woakes 35 (SL 67-5)

It's lambs to the slaughter, it really is. Chris Woakes finds some extra bounce, Kusal Mendis has no answer and can only fend to James Anderson in the gully. It's more likely than not that Sri Lanka will be all out tonight.

Before you tweet, I know I put 64-7 in the last entry. It's not, but you definitely get the sense that danger lurks around every corner for the Lankans. In the sunshine, the crowd are bang into this - wickets expected, rather than hoped for. Steven Finn round the wicket to Lahiru Thirimanne. Defence dodgier than Johnnie Cochran.

"I said at Leeds that it might be the same old story here if Sri Lanka couldn't overcome their frailty against the swinging ball. That 498-9 looks a long way away."

Nice start, Kirsty. No dogs, scoreboards or teas in there, though. Now then, is that a drop? Woakes to Mendis, going through to Bairstow, who is wrong-footed and can't cling on when he dives. It looks woody, but replays show it actually came off the back pad. Top nut from Woakes, mind.

"That's seven reviews for Sri Lanka in this series, and they've all been turned down."

At Headingley, Sri Lanka could rightly point to having the wrong end of conditions darker than an outhouse. Here, there's no excuse. The sun is out and the pitch is flat. Movement more darts player to the board and back than marathon runner out training. If this was England get spun out in Galle, they would be getting pelters for not being able to play the slow stuff. In an eight-ball stay at the crease, Mathews' lack of judgement around off stump was horribly exposed.

This could get messy. Angelo Mathews' fate is sealed, his edge behind off Chris Woakes confirmed. Again, it's a ball with not great threat, Channel, maybe a hint of movement, but no great technique from a Sri Lankan batsman. No feet, prod, edge, gone.
