    Silva 57, Mathews 35

Bosh! Moeen Ali keeps tossing it up... and Mathews keeps taking the bait, using his feet once more to drive over and wide of mid-off. He didn't quite get hold of it - this is keeping England interested. But they'll have to wait until after tea to try again.

England turn to their secret weapon, the one and only James Vince. Military medium doesn't quite do it justice. More Air Force Cadets, I'd say. Silva plays and misses at one, then can barely reach the next one. Dots all round for Vince. One more over before tea.

"That's a strong shot from Matthews. It was a good ball from Ali outside the off stump, a bit of drift. Matthews wasn't quite to the pitch of it but swung hard and smashed it over long-off."

Nothing like seeing out the session... Mathews makes it clear what he thinks of Moeen Ali's off-spin by dancing down the track and drilling him low over long-off for six. Not the prettiest of strokes - the bat wasn't quite straight enough for my liking - but mightily effective. Mathews then slices one just wide of mid-off's reach for a four to end the over. England won't be disappointed with either of those shots.

    Broad 12-5-28-0

I reckon there's time for three or four more overs before tea. Broad with the first of them but neither Silva nor Mathews are for budging. This is comfortably Sri Lanka's highest total of the series after making 91, 119 and 101. This stand, now worth 46, is also the tourists' best of the series. It's been that kind of tour.

At tea today, TMS will be speaking to Emma John, author of a new book "Following On", about the travails of following England in the 1990s.

As if to emphasise the lack of sideways movement with the ball, Woakes is afforded only one slip. A gully and a short cover are also in catching positions. Let me know when you want me to stop talking about men standing in a field. Tea is 14 minutes away.

"Now, this is a field. It's a field that demands the ball is pitched up. It's overkill if I'm honest. What England need to do is not get out the box too much and stay patient."

Now, this is interesting. Broad, in the hope of a breakthrough, shifts a man to short cover-point and another at short mid-off. That's not the length to invite the drive, though, Stuart. Mathews cuts powerfully for four when Broad drops short. The partnership is worth 43 in 12 overs.

    SL 138-3 (Silva 56, Mathews 12)

Woakes finds Silva's inside edge as he attempts to drive on the up, and the ball squirts past the stumps for a single to fine leg. Hands in the air from the fielders but the singing spectators don't miss a beat. Impressive focus. Silva drives for three more off the last ball, denied a boundary only by a full-length James Vince dive.

The words have barely left Daggers' mouth and Angelo Mathews plays and misses at one from Broad - after clipping the first ball of the over off his pads for four. For all the improvement in this Sri Lanka second innings, I've not ruled out the possibility of another collapse this evening.
