"A nice moment for Sri Lanka, they are all on their feet on the balcony applauding. More patience and application shown by this Sir Lankan side in the second innings."

Well batted, Kaushal Silva. Finn errs in line and the little right-hander glances for four to take him to a 111-ball fifty. Only the second for Sri Lanka in the series, no less.

"The lad's played well. Silva mustn't give it away now. When you get in, you must make them bowl you out with a good ball."

What do we have here? The helmet is needed as Nick Compton is shifted to backward short leg, a bit too close for the faint-hearted. Broad going to try some short stuff, one thinks. He strays down leg and the stump mic picks up a naughty word from someone in the vicinity. Hands up who swore. Two leg byes off the over.

Finn, his luxurious hair bouncing as he charges towards the crease, still can't quite find that extra nip that makes him such a formidable bowler on his day. After Mathews collects a single, Silva has few problems negotiating the rest of the over and keeps the strike by tucking one off his hips.

  8. SL 115-3 (Broad 8-4-15-0)published at 14:55 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Broad stomps back to his mark. Cook and Root, arms crossed, have a natter in the slips. A chant of "Who are you?" reverberates around Chester-le-Street. Silva can't pierce the field - in search of the boundary which would take him to 50.

"This field gives you an indication of the confidence of Finn at the moment. Even on a slow pitch, when he's at his best he'd have another gully, a third slip. You'd have your extra cover at point. The fact he's bowling at 80mph means Silva's thinking 'I'll have a bit of this'."

    SL 115-3 (35 overs)

Phew, that was close! Kaushal Silva is almost run out off the first ball after drinks. Angelo Mathews attempts a decidedly risky single off Steven Finn to gully. James Vince collects, throws... and misses with a sharp throw at the striker's end. That would have been very, very tight - and Silva gets a ball in the chest for his troubles.

Close. Well, close-ish. Broad nipping one back in from wide on the crease, Silva shouldering arms, the ball taking the top of the front pad. England decide against another review. Rightly so. And that's drinks.

Broad back into the attack for England. Silva has two slips and a gully for company. "How's it going, Kaush? Get up to much last night? Hotel breakfast any good?"

Finn attacking the base of Silva's stumps - or his toes, whichever comes first. Then a bumper, then a couple of half-volleys which yield seven runs. I think we know Silva can drive now, lads.

"Matthews doesn't look like he's lining them up very well because they haven't done a great deal those two balls yet he's played around one with the outside edge and one he's just played and missed."

  19. Postpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

That'll teach you to take a wicket, Moeen. The off-spinner out of the attack, with Steven Finn on in his place. Ruthless captaincy from Cook. He seems such a nice chap as well.

That delivery from Moeen to get Thirimanne really is worth another look - the stuff of spinners' dreams.
