Jonathan Edwards - the secret cricketer?published at 14:10 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

My friend James Philips (captain of Hull University 1st XI) faced Jonathan Edwards' bowling whilst playing for Sunderland CC and reported that he ran in from the sightscreen but was "rapid". Though he did apparently get quite annoyed with the opposition team sitting around the boundary clapping with increasing speed in time with his steps as he ran in to bowl!

And we have the first sight of spin in this innings. Moeen Ali on for Chris Woakes.

  4. SL 81-2 (Silva 26, Thirimanne 2)published at 14:06 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Plenty of swing from Anderson, but not late enough to trouble Thirimanne, who shows good judgement outside off stump. Like the first innings, he's in no rush. For the record, Thirimanne is wearing a base layer, short-sleeved shirt AND a jumper. Wouldn't happen at St James' Park. Six more dots.

"The pitch is slow, no skip. It seems to have lost that little bit of nip it had for the first few days."

The camera picks out Sanath Jayasuriya, the former dashing Sri Lanka opener and current chairman of selectors, in the crowd. He's sporting a rather fetching red sweater (lambswool is my guess) and a checked scarf. Still on the chilly side in Durham, despite Chris Woakes' short sleeves. Another maiden.

  8. SL 81-2 (Anderson 1-24 off 6 overs)published at 13:59 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

That's 14 wickets in the series for James Anderson - at an average of 7.5. Very reasonable. Bairstow also has 14 catches. I bet they wish they could play Sri Lanka every week. Steady from Anderson, watchful from the left-handed Thirimanne until he drives the final ball of the over for two through cover. There are men waiting there - he's got to be careful...

  10. SL 79-2 (trail by 318)published at 13:54 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Lahiru Thirimanne, who made 19 off 80 balls in the first innings batting at number six, is in at four. It says something when you get promoted two places up the order for scoring 19.

Half-hearted lbw appeal from Woakes as Silva is taken on the back thigh pad. Too high. Maiden over.

"A beautiful ball by James Anderson. Those early fours might just have annoyed him. That one is just angled in and pitched and left Mendis with a thin little tickle of an edge. You can just see Jimmy was a little annoyed with himself with those three fours and it might just have taken him a little longer to loosen up after lunch. Great line, great delivery."

    Mendis c Bairstow b Anderson 26 (SL 79-2)

Revenge for Jimmy. After leaking another boundary, he gets his man. Wonderful line on off stump, just a hint of movement away, Mendis is squared up, the edge is taken and wicketkeeper Bairstow has a simple job taking the catch.

"That usually jolts the mind, when you run up and bowl an absolute pie, which that was Jimmy, I'm afraid. Short and wide outside off stump, help yourself."

  15. SL 73-1 (21.2 overs)published at 13:46 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Take that! Mendis helps himself to successive crunching square-cuts for four as Anderson drops short and wide immediately after lunch.

  17. SL 65-1 (trail by 332)published at 13:44 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

A mixed bag from Woakes and seven off the over, including a three off his legs for Kaushal Silva. A smart single caps an impressive start to the afternoon session for the tourists. Baby steps.
