"Cook is also the quickest in terms of time from debut. Just 10 years and 90 days ago that he made his debut. Rahul Dravid was the previous quickest in 11 years and 283 days."

  2. Eng 7-0 (target 79)published at 15:19

Now we can get on with the game, England can get on with winning this Test match. Indeed, the surroundings, a dark day at an empty Chester-le-Street, didn't really match the size of the landmark. More spin from Herath, a couple to Hales.

"Had it been pulverised, it wouldn't have been Cookie. It had to dribble there. A very Alastair Cook shot. It raised the temperature."

"Big smile from Cook. The youngest batsman to do it in Test history. He raises his bat, almost sheepishly. A decade of dedication from Alastair Cook brings its reward. He's been remorseless and disciplined and single-minded."

  5. Eng 5-0published at 15:14

Chester-le-Street rose to applaud, cheers bringing out in Durham. Cook modestly raised his bat, but did not remove his helmet. He acknowledged the applause of his team-mates, who were all on the dressing-room balcony. In all of that, Cook's young daughter played in the stands, wonderfully unaware.

There it is! Alastair Cook clips Nuwan Pradeep off his pads, the fielder at square leg dives over the ball and the red leather just about trickles into the rope. He becomes the first England batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs, the 12th overall and, at 31 years and 157 days, the youngest, beating the record of Sachin Tendulkar. An incredible achievement, but still with many more to come.

"A gamble from the captain. There's a bit of turn in the pitch."

  8. Eng 1-0 (Cook 9,996)published at 15:11

All sorts of catchers round the bat, the leg slip and short leg most dangerous. Turn! Cook looks to play through the off side, but is almost foxed and eventually gets to 9,996 with an inside edge for a single. Alex Hales, no sign of any change-of-innings stress, sees off the rest of the over.

Maybe the bat sponsors have paid the Sri Lankan tailenders NOT to have their stickers on the bat.

Players are out there, Sri Lanka springing a surprise. Rangana Herath opens the bowling with his left-arm spin. Alastair Cook waits on 9,995...

I always wonder about the sort of chaos when there are only 10 minutes for the change of innings. Is Alex Hales currently in the dressing room, massive flap on, yelling "where's my thigh pad?".

"An update on umpire Aleem Dar - he's off the field because of sickness, so we probably won't see him again in this Test."

Lakmal c Broad b Woakes 11 (SL 475 all out)

Regretably, it's all over. Sri Lanka are all out for 475, the innings ended when Suranga Lakmal swats Chris Woakes high to Stuart Broad at mid-on. England will chase 79 to win this match. lastair Cook jogs off - the 10,000 club awaits.

  17. SL 471-9 (lead by 74)published at 14:58

Jonny Bairstow hasn't had the best of days behind the stumps. If the drop of Chandimal earlier was a mistake, this is more to do with poor fortune. One dies on him, scooting through his legs for four byes. Should still probably stop it, though. Still the Sri Lankan resistance lives. Les Mathewsables.

Garry Vaux: I'm not a betting man but what odds can I get for Alastair Cook to be out for four?

Albert Freeman: Such a shame Alastair Cook is likely to get his 10,000th Test run in front of such a small crowd.

  19. SL 465-9published at 14:53

This is superb viewing. Pradeep, looking for cow corner, takes Broad over the slips for four. I'll throw this out there now - there is nothing more entertaining in the entire game of cricket than a last-wicket pair dishing out some treatment...
