Perhaps perplexingly, Rangana Herath is given a twirl with the new ball only five overs old. He looks for some skid on to Jonny Bairstow, but the England keeper can drive into the 90s. Herath, angling the ball down the slope, almost gets excited against Woakes, but that took the inside edge.

Simon: There aren't many genuine all rounders at the moment, but with careful development England could have two in Stokes and Woakes.

Nuwan Pradeep, all bouncy hair and stubble, is summoned for a final push at the end of the day, running towards the pavilion with the media centre at his back. Woakes, slight shuffle across the crease, tries without success to get the ball through the covers. Five overs left in the day.

This is the point when a commentator says "he's no fool with the bat" and Woakes is out next ball.

Game very much in the balance here. One or two more before the close and Sri Lanka will feel like they are right on top. Even if England get to 280 or 290-6 at the close, the Lankans will feel in it. Nuwan Pradeep gets loose, so Mathews looks set to give himself the hook. Oh, lovely from Woakes, easing straight down the ground for four.

"England haven't had a great day. This isn't a great return for winning the toss - sunny day, good pitch. Whether it's enough depends on when we see Sri Lanka bat."

  7. Eng 255-6published at 17:50

Chris Woakes is warming to his task here, no doubt pleased to see the new ball in the hands of Mathews, rather than Lakmal or Pradeep. Twice he reaches out to guide the ball through the covers for four. It might be time for you to have a blow, skipper.

Shaminda Eranga recalled to share the new ball, looking to shape it away from Bairstow, who is hunting his second ton of the summer. I see that Bairstow has scored almost all of his runs square of the wicket on both sides of the ground, very little straight. That continues with a thumping drive through the covers for four.

Distracted whilst fielding. Playing at Bovington army camp many years ago. Found myself at long leg feeling I was being watched. Turned out to be a Chieftain tank resetting their gunsight by using me as a target!

Movement off the new, proud seam from Mathews, nipping the ball back down the slope to defeat the prod of Woakes. Shadows lengthen still further, England through the first set against the new cherry. Scoring negligible. Game on.

Northern grounds tend to be sparsely populated for Tests these days. So much for 'northern passion'.

Right then, new ball taken. No surprise there. Angelo Mathews still on, which is something of a surprise. I'm skipper, so I'm bowling with the new nut...

Rob Parker: ICC should consider giving a review back 80 overs after you use one, not at an arbitrary point regardless of if you've used them.

Firstly Nick, we all know you're recording it. Secondly, you could do us all a favour by telling us what happens, then we can all stick to the cricket. I can hear a well-lubed chap trying to start a Mexican Wave. I give it five minutes before he's thrown out. New ball available.

Nothing to see here. For one over, Sri Lanka have no reviews remaining.

I think Sri Lanka are trying it on here. Reviews get reset after 80 overs, so they lose nothing if this is struck down. Has Mathews got Woakes caught behind?
