And another! This is a snorter from Chris Woakes, extra bounce, coming down the slope and squaring up Angelo Mathews. Off the shoulder of the bat, to Joe Root in a fourth slip position, smart snaffle. Sri Lanka have lost 3-7 this morning and England are on the charge.

On the front row, a young chap in a cricket shirt sits behind a row of empty glasses. He's a bit young for that. I'll be honest with you, I could do without seeing the Lord's booze today. Delicate. Broad is round the wicket to the left-handed Thirimanne, angling the ball in with the aid of the slope. Lots of slope chat today, mainly because England have been using it to their advantage.

Different game today. Yesterday, the bowlers toiled while the batsmen enjoyed the placid conditions. Now, even though the ball is still doing little, England have made things happen through intent and the disciplined execution of meticulous plans. Batting is being made to look a challenge and the home side are on the front foot.

"Jonny Bairstow now has 18 catches in the series, which is the most by an England wicketkeeper in a three-Test series. He beats Geraint Jones' 17 against Sri Lanka at home in 2006."

Looking again, it was a touch wider than fourth stump from Broad. He also rolled his fingers over it, running the ball down the slope. Silva really didn't need to play, but he just couldn't help himself. Uncertainty around the off stump this morning eventually led to his downfall. Angelo Mathews is the new man, edging towards third man. Jonny Bairstow is the man chasing it! Bairstow, with pads on, has beaten Joe Root and Alex Hales in the chase. You can't keep him out of the game.

"That's outstanding bowling from Stuart Broad - he's worked his man out, he's set the field, he's bowled every single ball absolutely where it should be. That's how you bowl in Test cricket when the pitch is doing nothing."

    Silva c Bairstow b Broad 79 (SL 166-3)

The plan works! Stuart Broad has been testing Kaushal Silva outside the off stump, searching for the edge and, eventually, Silva obliges. Fourth-stump channel, Silva feeling for it, the thinnest of edges through to Jonny Bairstow, who this time clings on. A Lord's ton goes begging for Silva and excellent England are at it this morning.

Woakes is looking to run the ball down the slope to new man Thirimanne, a left-hander. Two slips and a gully wait, briefly interested as Thirimanne flashes to third man to get himself under way. Woakes, what looks like a sports bra under his shirt, rolls his arms as a small cheer comes from the crowd. Must be the first champers of the day.

Jack Mendel: Woakes is the closest we have to Simon Jones of old. Has put a lot of pace on, moves the ball, partnership breaker.

Merlin: Woakes's pace is good. Like it.

England have their tails up and are given further encouragement when Silva flirts with Broad outside the off stump. England's plan is simple - Broad running the ball down the hill with a packed off-side field, hoping to draw Silva into an error. To combat, Silva shifts his guard even further to the off side. Any more and he'll be batting at point.

"It was a good decision from Cook to give Woakes the ball this morning instead of Anderson. Maybe it was a hunch."

We might have expected to see James Anderson tearing in first thing in the morning, but England's decision to give the ball to Woakes has been vindicated. Yesterday he saw a catch dropped from his first ball, today he has done for Mendis. Replays show it would have taken half of leg stump. Lahiru Thirimanne is the new man.

"That's absolutely dead. It just came back down the hill and Mendis played across his front pad - it was hitting middle stump. That early breakthrough just gives you a lift. Great start for Woakes - I'm pleased for him."

Mendis lbw Woakes 25 (SL 162-2)

First ball! Chris Woakes strikes with his very first ball of the day and Kusal Mendis is on his way. Woakes, from the Pavilion End, gets one to go down the slope, with Mendis playing all around his front pad. Plumber than Professor Plum in the conservatory with the lead piping. Just the start England wanted.

More ties and garish blazers in the crowd as Broad begins by hanging the ball outside off stump. There's a catcher in place at short cover, with the tattooed Alex Hales doing well to pull off a diving stop at point. A maiden to begin, greeted with warm applause.
