"Oh dear, poor old Joe. He looks like the kid caught with his hand in the sweet jar. Hit him on the thumb and bounced straight out."

  3. dropped catch

Maharoof dropped on 27published at 49 overs

    SL 281-8

David Willey can be very pleased with his efforts, especially as he's not had much bowling this season. He ends with figures of 10-0-56-2.

That last number should read three, but Joe Root (yes, Joe Root!) spills the final ball of the over at long-on. Usually the safest pair of hands but after moving in to meet the chip by Maharoof he somehow lets it drop from his hands to the turf.

  4. SL 275-8published at 48 overs

Woakes misjudges his length to Maharoof, who gets inside a bouncer and hooks down to fine leg for four. Other than this, it is a good over.

"England will be happy with this. They're keeping the boundaries to a minimum, picking up the wickets and getting the new men in."

"Good bit of bowling from Plunkett. Missed the hole, and it was just short of a yorker. A leading edge, and Chris Woakes just had to move a few yards to take the catch. But it was a good innings from Mathews."

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 47 overs

    Mathews c Woakes b Plunkett 73 (SL 266-8)

A very good wicket for England to claim. Mathews was Sri Lanka's last slim chance of getting anywhere near 300 but he goes after firing a Plunkett ball straight down Woakes' throat after he had run in from long-off.

  9. 6 runs

    SL 263-7published at 46.3 overs

Maharoof isn't on fire, but he's trying desperately to spark up his lighter. He meets a Plunkett ball on the full and plants the ball into the stand behind midwicket.

"Mathews is running out of time to unload, with five overs to go. It was working perfectly when he was batting with Prasanna. England will be happy with this. Anything less than 300 you fancy your chances."

  11. SL 256-7published at 46 overs

Chris Woakes is going to see England home from one end. He returns in style, going for just the five singles. Mathews has a big swing at his last ball but swipes inside it.

"I'm thinking, with five overs to go, if Mathews has a worldie they can get up to 300. In an ideal world England will restrict them to below 270."

That 300 total is slipping away from Sri Lanka. You can thank England's bowlers for that. David Willey starves the tourists of any further boundaries. They have to go at 10s now and throwing the bat is liable to bring wickets. All on Angelo.

"I like Liam Plunkett bowling that end. It allows him to use his main weapon, which is the short delivery. At the other end, his short ball was being deposited to the boundary."

"I'm wondering if we could have had a couple of overs out of Joe Root. We might have split things up. Eoin Morgan is stuck with two bowlers but he may have had more options."

  18. SL 243-7published at 44 overs

Liam Plunkett receives applause from around the ground after another tight over. Two runs off it.

  20. SL 242-7 (Mathews 65, Maharoof 4)published at 43 overs

Mathews is a very smart batsman. He knows fine leg is up so when Willey veers off line he nicks the ball into the vacant space for four. The tourists still have 300 in their sights.
