  1. Eng 17-2published at 5.3 overs

These are the wickets to fall. Roy first, see how the ball from Mathews jags back off the seam. Then Hales, the unfathomable review. What do you make of it? He must have known he hit it, right?

"We were a little bit behind the times in the 2015 World Cup. We've only just caught up in the last year. When we first started it was like an extended T20. The skill level was ramped up massively. The introduction of fresh faces, that hadn't had the scars of the World Cup helped. It was really good."

  3. Eng 16-2 (target 287)published at 5 overs

Tense at TB, the patrons sensing that England are under the pump. Morgan crouches and waits for Lakmal, a sole slip hoping for a nibble. Root, anonymous so far, belts the ground with his bat and turns the ball to long leg. "Watch the ball," Morgan says to himself. It's turning into a cracker.

Si Lomas: That has to be the worst review of all time from Hales, truly selfish...must have known he'd hit that.

Merlyn: What. The. Hell. Was. That. Review? Smashing it to a fielder normally means out.

  5. Eng 13-2 (target 287)published at 4 overs

Remember, Hales changed his bat before facing a ball. If he'd left it, the old one might not have had enough meat for that ball to carry to mid-wicket. Morgan is away, jumping to hook a Mathews long hop for four. I'm still reeling from that Hales review, which is one of the most bizarre things I've seen in international cricket.

"England are without a review for the rest of the innings, they have lost their two ball strikers at the top, and Eoin Morgan is due some runs."

  8. Eng 7-2 (Lakmal 2-0-5-1)published at 3 overs

Right then skipper, what have you got? Eoin Morgan has not half-century in eight ODI innings, but his team need him now. England, chasing what looks to be a reachable target, are rocking.

"The way modern day cricket is, you would have suggested Sri Lanka are 40 runs short, but wickets make all the difference. Sri Lanka have set off like a train and they have done all that Angelo Mathews will have asked for them."

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.4 overs

    Hales c Perera b Lakmal 4 (Eng 7-2)

Absolutely bizarre. Alex Hales is out, caught at mid-wicket, after a failed review! In his defence, the ball hit his pad first, but he must have known he got some bat on that? Suranga Lakmal the bowler, Hales getting into a tangle, Kusal Perera doing the rest. It's fitting that the new Stone Roses single is playing, because the reviews for that were about as bad as this one from Hales.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 2.4 overs

    Eng 7-1

I think this could be the worst review of all time. I'm certain Alex Hales is caught at mid-wicket. That's right, the batsman doesn't know if he's hit it to mid-wicket or not...

"Roy is probably hitting more towards mid-on that mid-off. He's a nightmare to face - he's hard to get away, especially in the early stages."

  16. Eng 3-1 (Mathews 1-0-2-1)published at 2 overs

Looking again, that has done so much off the seam. Pitching a long way outside off stump and jagging back, it would have hit the top of middle. It struck Roy on the back pad, there really was no doubt about the decision. Joe Root is the new man.

"I was just about to question why he's opened the bowling with himself. But he is so naggingly accurate and he's on the money right away. Jason has just come fractionally across that.

"Mathews is a tough bowler because he's a very shrewd customer and he doesn't give you any pace to work with."

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.4 overs

Roy lbw Mathews 3 (Eng 3-1)

Out. Just out. Jason Roy has played across one and is dead in front. Bit of nip back from Angelo Mathews, Roy planting his pad and unable to find a way to get some willow on it. England have lost an early one and Sri Lanka are whoop whooping.

  20. Eng 3-0published at 1.3 overs

I hasn't spotted Hales swapping his bat, but I'll take James Taylor's word for it. How has he managed that? Captain Mathews got the runs for Sri Lanka, now he's opening the bowling. Later on he'll drive the bus too. Keeper up to the stumps...
