  1. SL 91-3published at 19 overs

Adil Rashid continuing to tease the Lankans after the break, Angelo Mathews taking up the challenge with a cut that flashes past slip fielder Joe Root. It's probably for the best that Root wasn't in the way of that one. It would have taken his head off.

"I live just down the road and it's been a serious deluge of rain. The ground is immaculate. For him to do that with just so little preparation time, it's credit to the groundsman."

  4. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 18 overs

    SL 87-3

TB buzzing, chatter in the crowd no doubt focusing on dinner plans, who's round it is and how well young Freddie is doing in the first XI. Plunkett, the enforcer, is pacy from back of a length in the final over before the drinks break. Nicely poised.

Paul Huxley: Today's England team has five better all-rounders than England had in total between Botham and Flintoff. Plus two batting WKs.

  6. SL 84-3 (Rashid 4-0-13-0)published at 17 overs

Without lingering on the point, or sounding like a total curmudgeon, but what value do those snippets of music between overs bring? And who decides what they should be? Instead of the awful dance music, how about a dash of Perry Como? More sweeping at Rashid, this time Mathews is the man to get the top edge. Run-rate down below five an over.

"It makes it a bit easier that physically I can't be out there. So far since I've done my brief stints on the domestic Twenty20, I've really enjoyed it. It's a totally different viewpoint. I really enjoy watching cricket. It's great to watch them."

  9. SL 80-3published at 16 overs

A group of chaps old enough to know better are wearing traffic-cone hats. Not actual traffic cones, because they aren't students. Stump to stump from Plunkett, quick enough to pin Chandimal on the hip, jolting the batsman into a cut for four.

Matthew Dowsett: Royal Air Force shirts are Wedgewood Blue.

Nezza: Electric Blue - the colour, not the range of gentleman's videos from the 80's.

  11. SL 74-3 (Chandimal 18, Mathews 5)published at 15 overs

Rashid is spinning a web here. Creeping approach, flight and dip, turn. Chandimal eventually looks for a sweep, somehow getting it over the startled Jos Buttler and directly behind the keeper for four. Dance music greets the boundary. Whoever introduced music to limited-overs cricket should be sentenced to a lifetime of listening to Dido on repeat.

"You get a feeling Sri Lanka will need 300, on this sort of surface, with the batting line-up that England have got."

  13. SL 67-3published at 14 overs

After that frantic start, we've slipped back into 'proper cricket'. Sri Lanka know they can't afford more wickets, while England are happy to sit in and build pressure. No boundary for six overs. Crowd know what's happening, humming their investment in the action. Good contest.

Dinesh Chandimal wants a single that isn't there - not even a half. Mathews sends him back. Running the skipper out isn't a good idea, Dinesh. The uncertainty comes as a result of the pressure being built by Rashid, who is both exerting control and posing a threat. England turning the screw.

  16. England women v Pakistan updatepublished at 14:55

    Kalika Mehta
    BBC Sport at Grace Road

"England women, chasing 166 to beat Pakistan in the first ODI, bring up their 50 off only 55 balls - almost twice as quickly as Pakistan - as captain Heather Knight drives Anam Amin to the boundary.

"Knight came to the crease after Pakistan captain Sana Mir bowled Georgia Elwiss with a beautifully flighted delivery. The hosts will be confident despite the loss of two early wickets, having scored nine fours in the powerplay."

Laura, is there isn't, there should be. Wedgwood blue is very distinctive, so speaks a proud Stokie. Leg-spin at one end, pace of Liam Plunkett at the other. Plunkett, all stubble and tattoos, has an iron-straight run and a tall action. Singles. England dragging this back. Wickets will do that for you.

  19. SL 61-3published at 11 overs

Slip in place for Rashid, the very chirpy Joe Root. Immediate signs of turn, the ball slowly revving past the prod of Mathews. Good start by Rashid, off stump and thereabouts, only two from it.

"Adil was bowling in the nets yesterday. Shane Warne was next to him. Can't imagine there was much technical in that. I don't think he's the type to get technical either, Shane Warne. Generally it's just a chat, about the game, and then a bit tactical."
