Was it one-time American rap marvel 50 Cent who made the film, Get Rich Or Die Tryin? Sri Lanka could make the film Get Runs Or Get Out Tryin. Chandimal calls for a single and would have been gone if Bairstow's throw had hit. Kamikaze stuff. I saw 50 Cent at a festival once. Someone had a sign that said "Hey Fiddy, it's in THE club".

  7. SL 56-3 (Woakes 5-0-29-1)published at 14:42

Looking again, Mendis got a glove on it, undone by the pace of Woakes, who is quicker than he looks. Angelo Mathews, listed to come in at six, decides it's time for a skipper's knock. You don't argue with him, he's got shoulders wider than the Thames. If he says it's Christmas, start singing carols.

And another! Sri Lanka are rattling along, but they're also shedding wickets as they go. Chris Woakes is in on the act now, too quick for Kusal Mendis. Bumper, Mendis hooking, getting a touch on the ball as it travels through to Jos Buttler. England on the charge.

"Someone like Willey is so skillful. He just gets a little bit of bounce because of the angle. He's such a dangerous option the left-armer - a bit like Chaminda Vaas."

  11. SL 54-2 (Willey 4-0-27-2)published at 14:36

Dinesh Chandimal is the new man, Sri Lanka full of heavy weaponry. He announces himself by driving a wide half-volley through point for four. This first eight overs has had plenty - wickets, boundaries, indifferent bowling and good catching.

"The lesser pace of Willey grabs in the surface and it's a wonderful catch by Roy. Bit of a Jimmy Taylor for a while! The ball was flying through the air for a good few seconds and was then in his hands."

Well held! Someone has pressed the fast-forward button on this match and Sri Lanka are two down. More swing from David Willey, the dangerous Kusal Perera gets a leading edge that loops behind point. Jason Roy takes a couple of steps to his right, takes off and gets both hands to it, clinging on. Good snaffle.

  14. SL 49-1 (Perera 25, Mendis 15)published at 7 overs

Are Sri Lanka taking some Test frustration out on the white leather? It's shot-a-ball stuff, aided by a lack of length control by England. Too short from Woakes, heaved over mid-on for four by Perera. Woakes seems to be having more joy with his off-cutters. A day to take the pace off?

"I always sat in the dressing room to immediate right of Alastair Cook, who sat on the immediate right of Jimmy Anderson. It's like a superstition. It's just because I'm a bit weird. I always take the same route to the ground. Jimmy would always be driving everywhere. And we had the same song, there was a song by a band called White Lies called Farewell to the Fairground."

  16. SL 43-1 (0-4-0-6-0-4)published at 6 overs

Sloppy from England, too short from Willey, a cut from Mendis through the hands and legs of point fielder Morgan for four. Willey took a wicket in his previous over, here he's been taken for 14.

This sort of thing drives me crackers. Liam Plunkett is out on the leg-side fence, 15 yards in from the rope. When Mendis whips a little to his left, Plunkett is flailing, diving, and unsuccessful in preventing the boundary. If he was right on, he'd stop that. When Willey strays down the leg side, Mendis flicks all the way for...six!

"Chasing 166 to win the first ODI, England's chase begins miserably as Lauren Winfield is caught at first slip off Asmavia Iqbal for a golden duck to audible gasps at Grace Road.

"Nain Abidi juggled the catch in the slips before managing to hold on. With no Charlotte Edwards in the England side, the hosts' task just got a little tougher."

Duck egg? I'm not for one second having that as a shade of blue. Are duck eggs actually blue? Woakes much tighter to Perera here, England defending slightly having removed the slips. Just back of a length, off stump and around. Two from it.
