  1. SL 204-7 (Tharanga 27, Randiv 4)published at 44 overs

That's outstanding. I'm not too fussed about ageing popstars, but do let me know if a cricketer has taught you to do something, especially if it's got nothing to do with cricket. Plunkett pounds the middle of the track, with Randiv twice lucky not to find the hands of a fielder. A Tharanga edge brings the first boundary in living memory.

"Paul McCartney taught me how to do a headstand in the Lord's gym. He had the same routine when he came to the gym. He'd use the treadmill for 10 minutes and then do the weights, and then he'd do his headstands."

  3. SL 198-7published at 43 overs

Bit of Catfish and the Bottlemen at Edgbaston, where Jasper Carrott watches on. Randiv actually looks much more comfortable than Maharoof, maybe should have come in a place higher. Singles the order of the day, but that's not hurting England.

"Sri Lanka have not been helped by losing those wickets at regular intervals, as soon as they get a partnership going. But you've got to give credit to Eoin Morgan. He's not been afraid to change bowlers, and to attack."

  5. SL 195-7published at 42 overs

More pace, the manicured facial hair of Liam Plunkett puffing chest towards right-hander Randiv, roared in by the Brummie crowd. Lots on the shoulders of Tharanga, who is starting to look more comfortable. Sri Lanka plenty off par, you fancy. Maybe 10 an over needed from here to be in the game.

  7. SL 191-7 (Willey 7-0-35-1)published at 41 overs

Suraj Randiv the new man. Not the worst number nine - he averages 15 - but England will feel like this job is close to being done. Nine to go.

"Perfect bowling from Willey, for a left-armer. A big airy-fairy drive from Maharoof, it was a disappointing shot from him."

    Maharoof b Willey 2 (SL 191-7)

Bowled him! Farveez Maharoof comes and goes, playing a Champagne Charlie drive at David Willey when he's been at the crease for only three balls. Top of off stump, neck and crop. England are in the hen house now, Sri Lanka looking set to fall well short.

"Chandimal turned it on the leg side. It wasn't the greatest throw, but Chandimal was so far down the wicket he didn't even bother trying to get back. Third umprire has not even been called for. What he was doing trying to take a single I don't even know."

Chandimal run out 52 (SL 186-6)

Oh no. This is a shocker. Dinesh Chandimal temporarily forgets that neither he or Upul Tharanga would make the Jamaica sprint relay team and calls for a single that's never there. Only when he is sent back does he remember his dodgy leg, turns like the Queen Mary and is nowhere near beating Jason Roy's throw from mid-wicket. England continue to chip away.

  13. SL 181-5 (run-rate 4.64)published at 39 overs

Adil Rashid's final over, another excellent spell from the Yorkshire leggie. Chandimal, employing the Gordon Greenidge 'if you're injured hit it harder' technique, can't get it through the field. Rashid takes his cap with figures of 2-34, helped by this belting catch from David Willey.

50 for Dinesh Chandimalpublished at 38 overs

    SL 178-5

Back on his feet, Dinesh Chandimal reaches a 16th ODI half-century by working Root into the leg side. Eighty deliveries, with plenty of time in this innings to add some extra mustard. Trouble is, he's hobbling like my grandad at the moment. I wonder if he'll take the gloves later? Then again, Sri Lanka carry about eight wicketkeepers with them.

All joking aside, Oxenford should not be allowed to officiate wearing that ludicrous object - I would have thought that it could be offputting to both batters and bowlers.

Goodness knows what Dickie would make of it...

Sri Lanka have barely got a healthy leg between them. First Mathews, now Chandimal, who is face down and getting the sort of treatment from the physio that would set you back scores if you asked for it in one of those fancy spas.

    Drinks breakpublished at 37 overs

    SL 171-5

The Barmy Army tell us who they are - that might be the first time I've heard that song this summer. At the minute, Tharanga is using his pads more than is bat, tied up by the flight and guile of Rashid. Chandimal made to wait for his half-century until after drinks.
