Sri Lanka are sweeping like Trigger now. A rare bad ball from Rashid is paddled fine for four by the one-legged Mathews. If they're not careful, they'll need a new brush. "This broom has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles."

Cheers, Dawkesy. More spin at Edgbaston than Westminster right now. Twirlers from both ends as the sun pokes through in Birmingham. Sri Lanka, for their part, are nudging and nurdling, this right-handed pair doing little more than tucking Moeen into the leg side. I think a Mexican Wave might be about to break out.

"He's bowling nicely again, Rashid. Even the toss of the ball in his hand looks rhythmical."

  6. SL 117-3published at 25 overs

After a brief delay while Chandimal had some strapping put on his hamstring, Rashid delivers another superb over, which almost brings him a wicket. Chandimal goes for a reverse sweep and misses but is lucky that the ball spins past the stumps.

That is all from me for now. Here is Stephan Shemilt.

Regarding the bionic pizza cutter attached to the umpire’s arm: given that the shield is presumably protection against batsmen who hit hard and straight, I suggest calling it a Driver Survivor.

"Mathews is such a crucial player to Sri Lanka that it's worth him being out there. He's hobbled two but that should have been three. He could be dangerous because if he gets to 50  he could cut loose."

"That is only the ninth boundary of the innings - two sixes and now seven fours."

  10. SL 116-3 Chandimal 25, Mathews 24)published at 24 overs

Brilliant fielding from David Willey to prevent a boundary. Chandimal pads another between slip and keeper and it looks as though he will get four until the Yorkshire player slides in and scoops the ball away from the rope. Adil Rashid performs a similar job a few balls later after chasing down a sliced cut shot from Mathews. No stopping the last ball, though, as Mathews clubs a cut to the rope. The Sri Lanka skipper is looking to seize his moment.

  12. SL 106-3published at 23 overs

This is a big partnership for Sri Lanka. It has foundations thanks to some patient run-building from both Mathews and Chandimal. As we approach halfway they will be thinking about how they can accelerate, Mathews in particular. They claim five singles from Rashid's second over.

Mattb811: No dead ball if the ball strikes an umpire so Oxenford could deflect the ball for 6 with his shield and it would stand.

  15. SL 101-3 (Run-rate 4.59)published at 22 overs

Mathews takes a calculated risk with a big sweep shot off Moeen after moving across the crease. He top edges but into space, which he clearly spotted prior.

He gets lucky a couple of balls later with another attempted sweep that hits his pad, beats keeper and slip and runs away for four leg byes.

  16. SL 94-3 (Mathews 11, Chandimal 22)published at 21 overs

Adil Rashid bowled superbly at Trent Bridge, going for just 36 from his 10. His second most economical ODI figures. Chris Woakes stops him conceding an early boundary with a neat stop near the rope at deep point. Six runs off the over.

  18. SL 88-3published at 20 overs

Sorry, my fault. Mathews hits the rope with a lovely shot off Moeen that drags the ball from outside off through square leg - the first boundary the spinner has conceded in his five overs.

It's easy to poke fun at Mr Oxenford's shield, but he must be quite a courageous chap. Choosing to be an umpire when he obviously has a deep fear of cricket balls.
