Lovely picture at Edgbaston, it looks a cracking place to be spending a Friday night. Weather set fair, good cricket, the prospect of a pint later on. England sneak another over of Root, with England asking against leftie Tharanga, who has arrived shrouded in uncertainty.

It's brilliant from Willey, who was running from long-on and ended up diving full length all with the spectre of a Hales knee to the face looming large. Upul Tharanga is the new man. Sri Lanka need a partnership here, or they could be shot out for a sub-par score.

"It was complete miscommunication. David Willey gave it to his partner. For a long time you thought it was going to long-off. It was brilliant. He did it nicely in the end after getting into a bit of trouble."
Prasanna c Willey b Rashid 2 (SL 163-5)
Whadda catch! David Willey dives to pluck one out of the sky after the devil on Seekkuge Prasanna's shoulder gets the better of him. Willey and Alex Hales come in from the straight fence, Willey swoops, clings on low to the ground then turns to Hales and says "I thought that was yours". I rather wanted to Prasanna bat for a while. Sri Lanka slipping here.
With the fall of the wicket, England go back to pace, recalling Liam Plunkett. In the crowd, those bananas are being chased by a gorilla. Ooofff, the swishing Prasanna takes on Woakes at mid-on and just beats the throw, which misses. Sit tight, this is getting tasty.
This is who we came to see. Seekkuge Prasanna and his fireworks arrive at the crease. Looking again, Rashid just held that one back a touch, which maybe caused the bounce. As some bananas run round the boundary, Prasanna swipes at and misses a Rashid googly.

"He will be hugely disappointed. They were meandering along the Sri Lankans. Mathews was approaching his fifty, he hadn't taken too many risks. And to get out at this stage, with the opportunity there to build a platform, and really kick on with his experience. It will be a disappointment for him."
Mathews c Plunkett b Rashid 44 (SL 159-4)
How England needed this. Angelo Mathews has fallen on his sword just when his team were getting on top. A sweep at Adil Rashid, a bit of extra bounce and a top edge. Liam Plunkett runs round to short fine leg to take the catch. Back in the balance.

"It's only the fifth time England have used three different spinners in an innings in a home ODI. The last time was in 2006."
England go through their options, asking the sunglasses-wearing Joe Root to roll some of his offies down. Round the wicket, sprinting through the over, all to the soundtrack of some beery singing. Appeal against Chandimal, but that's not turning enough.

"I still think 50-over cricket has a narrative - people still enjoy it. For a start they can come for a full day, and enjoy themselves, see their mates, have a few beers. That game at Trent Bridge, it was great excitement all the way to the end after a hundred overs. Fifty-over cricket never ceases to amaze me actually."

"C'mon Dilly" is the shout from behind the stumps as Rashid floats in once more. You feel like the party is just warming up in Birmingham. You know the type. You get there earlyish, maybe about 9pm. You don't know too many people, so you have a drink, nibble at the crisps and scroll through your phone. Later on you'll be dancing on the table and singing along to S Club, even though you hate S Club.

Can Bruce do concrete with that? I've got some paving slabs that need cutting to size...
Graeme, Staines
England in desperate need of a wicket now. Plunkett too short to Chandimal, who jackhammers a pull shot in front of square for four. Sri Lanka still have Seekkuge Prasanna in the hutch, who will be ready for some biffery, especially if this stand goes much longer.

"I don't mind Morgan trying to take wickets with Rashid. I don't mind Rashid just like there tossing it outside the off stump once in a while. Let's try and take a wicket in this middle period."
Rashid is operating with a leg slip. An odd placement for a leggie. Either he's bowling a poor line or he's looking for the googly. On Oxenford, it's got me thinking about what cricket equipment is yet to be invented. Hit me with it. Things that cricket needs that we haven't yet got...

"Angelo Mathews is the only Sri Lankan ranked in the top 40 ODI batsmen."
England have had enough of the sedentary stuff and replace Moeen with the pace of Liam Plunkett. More leg-sidery, though. Chandimal whips behind square for four. Sri Lanka growing in stature.
On Bruce Oxenford's shield, surely it isn't a natural reaction to protect yourself with your forearm? Wouldn't he be better off with a conventional armguard and helmet combo?
