One of the Sri Lankan players clearly doesn't approve of this weather. He is fully wrapped up in a towel like ET in Elliott's bicycle basket.
Meanwhile, out on the pitch, the Sri Lankan pair try not to let Moeen settle into a rhythm. Four singles off the over. It is almost five but Mendis is sent back and nearly run out. That's drinks. Sri Lanka on top.
This is the best we've seen from Kusal Mendis so far this series...
Rashid is failing to find a useful, consistent length. It is either too short or too full. Mendis latches on to one of the latter and launches over extra-cover for four.
It has been Sri Lanka's afternoon so far, thanks to Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka...
Moeen makes it a twin spin attack for England. Sri Lanka work him around the ground well to bring the 100 up before Mendis spots a short ball and pulls for four. England are going to have to dig in here.

"They have played nicely. It's an old-school Oval wicket. There's not many days when I arrive and think 'I wouldn't mind having a bat', but I did today."

"This is the highest Sri Lanka partnership of the series so far. The previous best was 82."
Whilst the issue has been raised, look at this for a stunning background. It's from Millfield school (where the likes of James Hildreth and Wes Durston have been brought up) - and that's Glastonbury Tor in the background.
SL 95-1
Too short from Rashid. His first two balls sit up nicely for Gunathilaka, who smash-cuts the first through point for four and then pulls the second for another.
Mendis reaches 50 with a neat guided shot for two. Just the 44 balls to reach it. Nine fours hit.

"Apart from the run-out, Sri Lanka's positivity between the wickets has been better today. Now they have a platform, can Mendis make a hundred?"
Good wheels Plunks. He is up around 88mph, trying to keep the Sri Lankan duo on their toes. He literally does this with a couple of short balls, one of which is called wide.

School cricket in September is a great idea in theory, but it means the cost of maintaining an usused cricket pitch for 6 more weeks during summer, on the off chance of some play in early autumn. Lots of extra cost there for each school.

Adil Rashid has had a cracking series with the ball so far. This will be a test for him, though. It is a good wicket and the rain won't make it easy to grip the ball. Gunathilaka gives an early warning with a lofted four over mid-off. Rashid isn't flustered and keeps the two tied down after. That is one of the things that has impressed about the Yorkshire spinner of late - he doesn't let batsman unpick his strategy as he used to do.

"I'd love to see schools keep playing cricket in September. Most school cricket has been nullified for the last three or four weeks because of the weather. Why not play when they go back after the holidays?"
Best shot of the day from Mendis. He leans in to a full, wide Plunkett ball and drives magnificently through cover for four. It is proper bar towel weather. Make sure mid-on and off have ball-drying kit.

"This is right on the tipping point. If the rain was any harder they would go off. It's good that they are trying to keep going."
It is still drizzling but the umpires are holding firm. Rob Bailey is burying his head as low into his upturned collar as he can manage. I wonder if Bruce Oxenford's shield has other features, like Inspector Gadget? Go Go Oxenford umbrella!
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka continue to hit the rope. Gunathilaka flicks another Woakes ball off his hip and watches satisfied as it flies away.

"There's the odd ball that's bouncing - it's an Australian wicket. Bowlers are trying to force the error. Sri Lanka will be thinking that 300 is a minimum."
