  1. SL 58-1 (Mendis 39, Gunathilaka 17)published at 9 overs

Oh, Mendis gets lucky as he almost drags on to Plunkett. Going back he inside edges and watches in relief as the ball bounces over his stumps. He then survives an lbw shout. The ball nipped about and was going both down leg and probably over the top. Other than that, it was plumb.

Mendis has the las word, though, punching another four through the off side off is back foot.

    Beautiful stuff.

  3. SL 51-1published at 8 overs

Kusal Perera looks thoroughly fed up sat in the Sri Lanka dressing room. Kusal Mendis is filling his boots having benefited from Mendis' early run out. Having conceded two boundaries in his previous over, Woakes bounces back with a much tighter six balls.

"Rain is falling and getting worse. I'm reminded of a Champions Trophy game in 2004 they played here through constant drizzle. We might get lucky."

  5. SL 48-1published at 7 overs

England in need of a change and unsurprisingly opt for big Liam Plunkett. The boundaries keep coming, though, as Plunkett veers too close to leg stump and is flicked away to the rope by Gunathilaka. The Sri Lanka opener then tries to smash the next ball through cover and cracks his bat. A crushing moment for a club cricketer, but a mere minute's worth of inconvenience for these well-stocked pro lads.

"Mendis has made a good start. He's looking to hit fours and be positive. The Oval has a consistent bounce that the batsmen can trust."

  7. SL 42-1 (Mendis 31, Gunathilaka 11)published at 6 overs

Mendis is looking brilliant at the moment. He rocks back and punches for four off Woakes and then drives straight for another boundary. He's hit seven fours in 13 balls. Not too shabby.

"This is the 16th time David Willey has opened the bowling for England. He's struck in the opening 10 overs of the innings on eight of those 16 occasions."

  9. SL 33-1published at 5 overs

Kusal Mendis is taking no prisoners today. He has come out full of intent. He lofts Willey over the top - three bounces for four. He then flicks a subsequent delivery down to backward square - three bounces for four.

Barring one mad run, Sri Lanka have started really well.

  10. Watch: Perera is run outpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 29 June 2016

Here's the moment again when England got their first wicket of the Sri Lanka innings.

  12. SL 24-1published at 4 overs

Woakes is quickly into a rhythm here. He fires one through a quicker one, just short of a length and is unlucky as Mendis edges wide of the slips for four.

The tourists then again get in a muddle over their running as Mendis calls for a run before then sending Gunathilaka back as Bairstow charges to the ball at cover.

No issues with the last ball, though. Mendis drives wide of midwicket for four.

  14. SL 15-1published at 3 overs

Kusal Mendis is the new man for Sri Lanka. He gets into the groove with a steered shot through point that beats the in-field and reaches the rope. All eyes and hands that shot.

Umpire Bruce Oxenford has his shield on again. I can't be the only one intrigued to actually see this device in action? I want to see him fending off a well-struck returned half-volley like Neo from the Matrix.

  17. SL 9-1published at 2 overs

Sri Lanka the architects of their own downfall. They made a decent start in the first over but England are now bouyant. Meanwhile, Steven Finn dunks a biscuit in his brew on the sideline. Sometimes it's good to be a 12th man.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.3 overs

Perera run out 0 (SL 8-0)

My word, that is shoddy. Three times Gunathilaka prods at Woakes and threatens a single. From the third, he sets off, but crucially Perera pauses and is short of his ground when Jonny Bairstow hits after scampering in from cover. Sri Lanka take aim and blow one of their own toes off.
