Re Ben Edgcombe not selecting Stokes - you're assuming he comes in for a bowler, but he might just as well replace Vince or Ballance.

Heave! Misbah tries to pull a short one but instead deflects it over the keeper's head. Broad can't quite fathom this. There's more from Misbah as he plays an excellent back-foot drive through cover for four. This time it's eyes shut in frustration from the England bowler.

The TMS team discuss the Pakistan veteran's unusual 'leave' technique.

The older Younus has got, the more he has done that. Maybe it is to warm his body up but it is extraordinary.

  4. Pak 82-3published at 14:09 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Younus has a very unorthodox manner of leaving, but it's effective. Almost looks like he's about to tumble on to the ball but pulls back at the last second. He and Misbah steal a couple of singles off Ball.

Here's Jake Ball's debut Test wicket. One never to forget, for the bowler at least.

  6. Pak 80-3 (Broad 10-5-13-0)published at 14:04 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Broad is the most senior bowler in England's line-up today, and he bowls his fifth maiden of the day. Misbah holds firm though: gentle in defence and in pushing the ball effortlessly away from the body.

Yes, that's correct. Please also remember to put your names on texts.

Pakistan have got a minor recovery job on their hands at the moment. Very minor, more of a see out the next 10 overs and it's comfortable. Gary Ballance fields well at backward point off the final ball of Ball's over.

Ben Edgecumbe: If Ball keeps this up then Stokes wouldn't get in my team for the next Test, only change Anderson for Finn

FTA Sport: First wicket for Ball. Sometimes calls your way, sometimes they don't. But this one really shouldn't have.

  10. Pak 79-3published at 29 overs

England have, by my count, six fielders inside the circle on the off side. Broad gets the ball swinging ever so slightly, but Misbah gets off the mark with a nudge on the leg side. Well, more of a dug it out of his belt area but whatever does the job.

After a morning session of jabs and feints, Jake Ball's first Test wicket has woken up a somewhat sleepy post-postprandial Lord's. Azhar can consider himself a little unlucky if the reaction from those watching the giant screens is anything to go by - roars of surprise when the review fails to have the original decision overturned.

  12. Pak 77-3 (Younus 19, Misbah 0)published at 28 overs

Great start for England in the 28th over. Jake Ball gets his first wicket in Test cricket. Bit of a 50-50 some would say as the ball was just about hitting leg stump. But will he care? Doubt it.

Misbah-ul-Haq, the captain, comes in to bat.

Ball would have preferred to nip one back and rip out middle stump but you'll take them any way they come for your first wicket.

    Azhar lbw b Ball 7 (Pak 77-3)

Well, I said things might change dramatically soon. And Ball does exactly that! Azhar reviewed that lbw decision and it's shown to be clipping leg stump. Umpire's call, and he's out.

Gone early with an lbw, as Azhar takes a mighty tumble. He's given out, but Pakistan take the review.

Broad just got a bit of swing going there so that's something to work with for the England bowlers.

Azhar Ali sees out a maiden from Broad to get us under way. Tidy start, but Broad may want things to change quickly perhaps as he went wicketless in the morning.

Interesting words from Dave Richardson about relegation – I actually think the Ashes should not happen if Australia get relegated (why do we always assume it will be England!); will make the Ashes more eagerly anticipated when both teams get back in to the same division, which would actually increase its sporting worth.

We're yet to see a half-century of course. Mohammad Hafeez came close to one in the morning session, but a wild pull resulted in a simple catch for Bairstow and he departed for 40.

Right, on that note, we are about to begin the afternoon session. Strap in.

Thanks Steph! This could be a very interesting session for Pakistan, who have looked relatively solid. All of England's chances and wickets have come behind the stumps, so to speak. Pakistan have got the incredibly reliable Younus Khan at the crease, so no reason they can't build on this.
