12:46Rahat Ali is serving an early lunch to England here, a buffet of half-volleys as the sun tries to break through at Lord's. First Root pushes down the ground, the whips through mid-wicket for back-to-back boundaries. Speaking of lunch, which is only 15 minutes away, Michael Vaughan will be live on the BBC Sport Facebook page with our very own Tom Fordyce.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialI was watching their fielding practice earlier, and one of the messages from the coaches was that there's plenty of work to be done for the cordon.

Mohammad Amir has learned a few lessons over the past six years or so. Another is 'make sure your fielders don't drop Alastair Cook'. Big, big life for the skipper. Edge to first slip, Mohammad Hafeez only needs to get down to his ankles to take it, but the ball is in and out. Rubbing it in, Cook clips the next ball for four.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialThe problem Pakistan will have with this attack, is that they're all so aggressive and attacking. They can all bowl the golden ball and it's a great spectacle. But there will be a time when Misbah says 'bowl me a dot ball, let's build a bit of pressure'.

12:37Ken Clarke is in the crowd, talking to no one in particular. Probably hoping no one has left a mic on. Bar the wicket of Hales, Rahat Ali's radar has been awry. Too straight to Cook, touch of width to Root, who sends it to the off-side fence. Struggling with the slope? Speaking of that wicket of Hales...

Jacob Whitehead: Alastair Cook is 21 off nine, what a time to be alive.
Andrew Lane: Check out Cook's strike rate!!! Almost at 300!!!
jdblues53: Hales, Vince, Ballance likely be found out against decent Pakistan bowlers compared to Sri Lanka lollipops faced so far.

12:33No rest for Chris Woakes, he's already got his pads on and is walking round the boundary edge to the nets. I applaud that. Not his trip to the nets, but the fact he's on a lap of the boundary. You just don't see enough pros doing that. Amir to Root, a horrid misfield at point by Yasir Shah getting the right-hander off the mark with a boundary. Misbah's reaction priceless, head in hand. "Honestly. I captain, I score the runs, do they want me to field for them too."

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialHow many teams have I played against that have had three left-arm seamers. It's quite rare. Yorkshire v Notts, they had Gary Sobers, Barry Stead, and remember Carlton Forbes?

12:29Rahat Ali is suggesting he can move the ball both ways in the air. Cook, though, has seen it all before. Very full length, slight tail in to the pads, tucked away for four not once, but twice. Very warm applause from the patrons. The skipper has 21 from 10 balls.

Have there been many other occasions a test team has fielded an all left arm Seam attack?

12:24It's tense at Lord's. Every pair of eyes is on the action. This isn't one of those periods where you can nip to the Champagne bar for half an hour safe in the knowledge you won't miss anything. Amir hurries in, Cook slices past gully for four then clips three off his pads.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialPakistan just had to make enough runs to give the bowlers a chance. And we saw in the UAE, they can play.

12:21Yep, someone has sneakily nailed Alex Hales' feet to the floor. They went nowhere. The edge comfortably carried to Azhar, further evidence that this deck has got a bit more in it for the bowlers. Joe Root, in his new position of number three, is the new man. Real game on here.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialHis feet didn't go anywhere - it was indeterminate. The left foot goes a fraction outside the crease. I'm always saying batting first and foremost you've got to get the feet in the right position and balance. The rest becomes easier. You don't get the feet right you got to be lucky.

12:19Hales c Azhar b Rahat 6 (Eng 8-1)
Just in case you needed proof that England are in a real battle here, Rahat Ali strikes in his first over. He was shaping the ball into Alex Hales, but then persuades the batsman to follow one that continues down the slope. Thick edge, snaffled by third slip Azhar Ali, huge celebrations.
Eng 8-0published at 12:16
12:16Rahat Ali, the second of the trio of left-armers in this Pakistan side, shares the new ball. He too it looking for swing away from Cook and into Hales, only he has to move the ball up the slope. Cook almost chops on, Hales is almost squared up, tough times for the England openers.

Greg Double: Amir was the least guilty of Pakistan's disgrace and deserves a second chance...but I want Hales to absolutely muller him.
Richie Macca: Here comes the Amir five-fer. What a talent. He's gonna be the best bowler in the world in the next five years.
Eng 7-0published at 12:14
12:14Now that is out of the way, England will do well to remember the threat the left-armer poses. Swing away from Cook, in to right-hander Hales, who rolls his wrists on a leggy delivery for four down the slope. Once more, the chatter at HQ cranks up, the buzz definitely louder than yesterday. I guess this is an 'I was there' moment.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialI could hear a few idiots in the crowd shouting 'no-ball'. Why don't you go home? Disappear!
