That was more out than Moeen Ali's.

My word. Breathe again, Stuart Broad. The replay shows it was a much closer shout that we first thought. Impact in line, just sliding down the hill. Hitting off stump, but not enough to get the decision overturned. This might now be the last over of the day.

Moeen Ali's was a lot similar to this. That's why I think Pakistan have opted for a review.

This looks optimistic from Pakistan. Yasir to a sweeping Broad, lbw turned down.

If Misbah doesn't fire in the second innings, Younus has a bad innings it could be all over for Pakistan. So England must have hope. Pakistan will tell themselves even if they get one 50 on the board, then the bowlers can do the damage.

Should have known. Yasir switches ends again.

Yasir Shah withdrawn, his work for the day may finally be done. Wahab Riaz is cranked up for one last spell and is going through his tricks. Bumper, yorker, slower ball. Broad, not always with any great certainty, gets through it. Time for two overs before the close.

If you're an all-rounder doing well in one area of your game, then you can do well in the other. Woakes comes across as an intelligent batsman. He's good against Yasir Shah, looks very solid.

Lots of empty seats inside HQ now, Amir switching to round the wicket and bouncing his dark mop in to Woakes. Mohammad Hafeez, off the field, sits with the members, having a right old chinwag. Where have all the spectators gone? Was it not worth sticking around to watch the whole day?

Yasir has deceived them with a bit of variety as well. It's the inability to read spin. The fact is he's been in marvelous form the last 18 months. It is an important performance. Normally you associate Yasir with UAE conditions so he had to convince everyone that he could perform in conditions that weren't normal for him.

Broad is intent on sweeping Yasir, who responds with a smile brighter than the floodlights. Whisper it quietly, but this England pair are building very steadily. Off the pad of Broad, optimistic shout for caught behind. Good take, mind. 15 minutes or so to go before the close.

England is inching its way towards a team set up with mainly all-rounders.  Stokes to return, Woakes and Moeen to stay. Scott Borthwick the next middle order batsmen due for a try, and eventually Jos Buttler coming back but Bairstow remaining as a batsman and second keeper: Cook, Hales, Root, Borthwick, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Moeen, Woakes, Broad, Anderson.

The light has improved, Amir beaming at the end of his run before he charges in to Broad. To be fair to Broad, who is sometimes found wanting against pace, he has dug in against Amir. That will be the mongrel in him.

There are 10 overs left, but I doubt we'll get them in before the 18:30 cut-off. Yasir, omnipresent this afternoon, continues to bound in, fizzing little red globes of danger to Woakes' off stump. Five for Yasir, remember, the last of which was Moeen Ali...

Christopher Lane: How come umps hasn't taken them off yet? Pitch is lit up like Blackpool illuminations!

  18. Eng 239-7 (65 overs)published at 18:03

The playing area is illuminated by floodlights. If you've ever played five-a-side football outside on a winter night, you'll know what I mean. Bumper from Amir, enough light for Broad to duck underneath. Fly slip in place, Pakistan expecting a Broad waft. They're right, the left-hander almost popping a shoulder out. No connection.

The other thing is that if you bowl a bumper, the umpires speak with each other and then they take you off.

  20. Eng 236-7published at 17:57

Umpires get together, return to their ends. It's still Amir, so Pakistan haven't been given the nod to pull the quicks.
