Summary

  • Leg-spinner Yasir takes five wickets

  • Amir bowls Cook for first Test wicket since spot-fixing ban

  • Pakistan 339ao - Misbah 114, Woakes 6-70

Touch short from Yasir, not quite the same groove from the Nursery End that he from the Pavilion. Woakes goes back, but learns the lesson of Bairstow and keeps his bat straight. This stand is worth 30. Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey. ("I could catch a monkey" - Gareth, The Office)

Alastair Cook was bowled for the first time in 32 first-class innings, the last time he was dismissed in this fashion was during the Ashes in August 2015 by Nathan Lyon.

Stand by your beds, Yasir's merely switched ends.

Rahat Ali has sprayed it all over. He's bowled it both sides of the wicket.

  5. Eng 223-6published at 17:25

Rahat, stiff action of a man with a metal pole for a spine, battles with the slope as he runs in towards the media centre. On the England balcony, Stuart Broad chews gum as he sits next to Gary Ballance. Might not be best to ask him for advice, Stu. Lord's hum dimmed. Some perhaps already heading for pre-drinks before a night at the theatre.

I don't think it's as easy as saying England don't play spin well - it's not often you come up against a spinner as good as Yasir Shah. Only a select few will play him well.

  7. Eng 219-6published at 17:22

Mercifully for England, Yasir Shah is replaced by Rahat Ali. That was a 15-over spell for Yasir, in which he took 4-46.

Pakistan will be delighted with the position of the match, but Misbah will be disappointed. I don't think the seamers have bowled as well as they can. The fielders certainly have not been near the standard expected.

I'm trying to remember another time when a cricketer has gone from nowhere to being so heavily relied on by England. Chris Woakes has already taken six wickets and now he's trying to hold back the Pakistan tide, reaching out to drive Wahab through the covers. He did, however, tangle with Thomas the pigeon, which I think is unforgivable.

Thomas DJH Stirk: England's winter will be spent facing 80-plus overs of spin a day. The way we're playing Shah doesn't fill me will confidence.

Luke Flannigan: No more wickets please. Shah has exposed the middle order, blowing them away (without much spin). England looking on in disbelief.

Sam Goldman: The difference between having a world class spinner and a half-decent batsman who turns his arm over.

  12. Eng 214-6 (Moeen 13, Woakes 13)published at 17:13

Rare loose one from Yasir, leggy, allowing Moeen to throw his hands through a sweep that goes behind square for four. Did you look up that Warne to Stewart delivery I mentioned? What do you think of the similarities to this Bairstow dismissal?

It's been all or nothing from the England batsmen. They have been going for the big shots and the boundaries and not pushing the ones and twos into gaps.

Wahab Riaz, hair rapidly going backwards, is striving for one more here. I'm not sure I fancy Broad, Ball and Finn against Yasir and that is exactly what Pakistan will be thinking. Wahab not quite at his quickest, high-80s, watched by four chaps with no fewer than four empty bubbly bottles in front of them. Top toffery.

This is a joy, to see such world-class leg-spin - I think it's the finest sight in Test cricket. There's something about a wrist spinner.

  16. Eng 203-6published at 17:04

Yasir is bowling down the slope, turning the ball uphill. That means the ball is drifting into the pads, straightening, causing problems on both edges for the right-handers. When a wide one does turn, a Woakes waft is defeated. Then a googly. "Lovely bowling," from the keeper. It's brilliant stuff.

Francis Edwards: So that's two things England don't do in training. Catching and playing spin, dear me! It's not even doing anything!

So then, England are in the stickiest situation since Sticky the stick insect got stuck on a sticky bun. Wahab Riaz to Moeen Ali, a combo that ended with Moeen taking one in the bonce in the UAE. Lord's chatters, maybe in disbelief.

Thomas the pigeon comes to short cover and is nearly hit by a Woakes defensive stroke. Thomas styles it out, oblivious. When a fielder tries to shoo him away, he lands on the track. I'll think you'll find that Thomas spends more time here than you players.

Why is it that, despite many changes in the batting line-up, the same old failings keep occurring? Pakistan have got this series on the basis of their superior bowling and England’s top 6 being so poor. To my mind, England are getting worse.

We'll have a clip of that wicket for you shortly. In the mean time, stick 'Shane Warne flipper Alec Stewart' into a search engine. You'll see what I mean. Chris Woakes is the new man. England have depth and, the way this is going, they need all of it. I say depth, but is the batting all that deep when Yasir is going through his tricks?
