This is when you have to assess the situation as a right-hander. When you first go in, you have to nullify the attack. Now you haven't got it moving around that much, you've just got to play it a bit differently.

There are a few drops of rain falling as Wahab gets the ball reversing at pace in this final set before the break. Ballance hit on the pads, appeal turned down. Vince beaten outside the off stump.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Shah change ends. I don't think it's quite worked for him from the Nursery End.

There's a leg slip and short leg in place as Yasir looks to target the pads of Gary Ballance. The leftie was leg before in the first innings, remember. Touch too straight from Yasir, who hasn't quite been at his best in this morning session. Time for one more before the break.

Paul Lawrence: So Woakes could take 10 wickets in a match and be on the losing team. Has this happened before?

Ali Mason: Dare I say Compton would have been the man you want for this situation? Dig in and frustrate the bowlers.

I say Ballance has got that big backwards trigger movement, but he does seem to be in position much earlier than before, so that he's still when the ball is delivered. Wahab, struggling to keep his hair on, hangs the ball outside off stump, with Ballance reluctant to play. Five minutes or so to go until lunch.

You're not going to smash a bowler like Yasir around on a day-four wicket. You've got to be able to defend, occupy the crease for a period. You'll get an opportunity.

Leg-spin is a dark art, isn't it? A little club with not many members. Yasir Shah has worked with Shane Warne, who is on the telly talking about how he's looking forward to seeing Lancashire's 19-year-old Matt Parkinson. Young Parkinson will probably get taught the secret handshake. Uppish from Vince, a drive just clearing the leap of the point fielder, but a long hop is cut with certainty. Better from the Hampshire man.

Wahab Riaz has got James Vince's bings going. Is this Vince's moment?

No change for Yasir yet, Wahab is on from the Nursery End, probably to bowl two lengths - very short and very full. At first, Vince looks comfortable, hooking for four, but a second short ball is edged through the vacant third slip area. Vince, though, is up the fight, hooking another boundary. Combative stuff.

That's the perfect way to play the spinner. Yasir Shah will be feeling pressure. He's only human.

  12. Eng 57-3published at 12:41

Nice shot from James Vince, skipping back to force Yasir through the covers for four. Yasir hasn't made a great deal happen just yet - he's trying to turn the ball up the slope. Maybe a change of end required?

I don't recall getting a good look at Gary Ballance in the first innings (he wasn't in long enough), but he's still got that large stride backwards the bowler delivers the ball. Rahat goes very full, but is just too leggy, allowing a clip fine for four. Here's the shot Joe Root played. Probably best not to watch it if you're already in a bad mood.

Rahat Ali is probably the one bowler England didn't spend too much time talking about, but he's got three wickets. It looked to me they came out playing all the shots, thinking 'oh we've got to play Yasir Shah'. So far they've played him nicely.

  16. Eng 49-3 (target 283)published at 12:33

So England have lost three, not one to Yasir Shah. At least two of those wickets were avoidable. There are fielders running all over the show, with Shan Masood finally settling under the nose of James Vince at silly point. There's just under half an hour to go until lunch. Any more wickets before then and England really are toast.

That's twice that Joe Root has skied the ball in this match. Yasir Shah, the fielder, was expertly placed by Pakistan, some way in from the rope for the mishit. Rahat Ali, despite bowling some dross, has picked up all three wickets. Gary Ballance is the new man. Welcome back, Gary.

Absolutely knocked it to him. Joe Root walks back as slowly as you can without falling over. He just sort of poked it really.

It's awful. Simply awful. Joe Root has fallen into the oldest trick since that pesky snake offered an apple to Eve. Rahat Ali has two men out on the leg-side fence. He drops the ball short and Root can't resist. Pull shot, top edge, straight to Yasir Shah at deep square. England are making a hash of this run chase.
