  1. Eng 31-1 (target 283)published at 11:48

Cats watching cricket. Naturally. It's Jekyll and Hyde stuff from Pakistan at the moment. Mainly Hyde, in fact. A wide half-volley from Rahat is eased to the cover boundary by Joe Root. England filling their plates at the buffet, because there will be famine when Yasir Shah gets the ball.

Apparently there are 850 tickets still available on the gate at Lord's today. Get yourself down. Amir comes round the wicket to Hales, looking to starve the right-hander of width. Chanting from the Pakistan fans as Yasir Shah does some loosening exercises. Lovely shot from Hales, driving through extra cover for four.

I don't care who you are, Len Hutton, WG Grace or Alastair Cook. The ball doesn't have to do anything but you have to get your judgement right. It doesn't have to be a magic ball or anything. That's a perfect example.

  5. Eng 23-1 (Rahat 2-0-13-1)published at 11:39

Looking again, it was a good line from Rahat Ali. In-between length, pitching on off stump, straightening off the pitch to take the edge. Pakistan have one of England's main batting pillars removed, now they face the other. Joe Root is away with a wonderful back-foot drive. "Rooooooot."

It's the perfect line and the perfect length. It didn't do anything but it's got the finest of nicks. It hasn't done anything but it's in the perfect line. If you bowl in the area, all the time, you can make it very, very difficult.

    Cook c Sarfraz b Rahat 8 (Eng 19-1)

Huge, huge wicket and a massive blow to England's chances of winning this Test. Finally Pakistan get it right, Rahat Ali taking a journey down the corridor of uncertainty. No feet from a jumping Alastair Cook, a thin edge through to Sarfraz Ahmed. Big cheer when the finger is raised - there's plenty inside Lord's celebrating that one.

I don't think the Pakistani seamers are that good. They've been very disappointing from what I've seen. Riaz is medium pace, Amir's not been disciplined. It's not the word you'd use for Pakistani cricket - discipline.

  9. Eng 19-0published at 11:32

Andy Flower is on a posh balcony, a row behind Judy Murray, who is just taking her seat. A bit late, Judy? Three slips and a gully in place for Hales, who throws the kitchen sink at a wide half-volley and gets four through cover. Pakistan bowling some pretty rank stuff at the moment. Just switching on? England needed only 13 balls to wrap up the Pakistan innings earlier today.

One thing about England's batting is that there is a lot of pressure on Cook and Root. But it might be the time for a Vince to shine, or Bairstow perhaps?

  11. Eng 13-0 (target 283)published at 11:29

The lumbering, stiff figure of Rahat Ali shares the new ball, swinging the ball but serving up some allsorts. One delivery has Cook squared up, while successive short deliveries are cut for three by the skipper, then worked off the hip for a boundary by Hales. Every run being cheered by the crowd. Very un-Lord's-like.

England, probably if they bat the day, won't be far from the target, if not actually knock it off.

  13. Eng 4-0 (target 283)published at 11:24

Amir tightens his line, flitting around the crease to alter the angle of delivery. Lord's far from full, is home to a few Pakistan fans, who are making a bit of a din. Tension in the air. Most know there's a good chance we will see the end of this match today.

Geoff Stapley: This morning's first job done by England. Slow and steady wins the race now.

Dr Clare Wood: Cookie 142* and Alex Hales 141*. Job done. Cheers boys.

  15. Eng 4-0published at 0.1 overs

That's a nerve-settler. First ball, short and wide, cut for four by the skipper.

If Hales can play in a positive fashion, get through the new ball, if he can get a blistering 50 or 60 that will put the cat among the pigeons.

Amir at the end of his run, Alastair Cook taking guard. Alex Hales at t'other end. No real crowd reaction when Amir is announced. Three slips and a gully. Play.

Mohammad Amir is loosening, Alastair Cook in his sights. Amir effectively dismissed Cook three times in the first innings, having him dropped twice before eventually knocking him over. Misbah, looking every in the leader, takes his troops to the middle.
